The greatest to never win kona
Of all the long distance triathletes over the history of the sport, who's the best to never win kona?

A few come to mind immediately:

Andreas Raelert
Andy Potts
Caroline Steffen
Yvonne Van vlerken

Vanhoenacker, great call. Impeccable record outside of Kona, still going sub 8 in his 40's.

I'd have thought Andreas Raelert. Before him, probably Pauli Kiuru in the men's.

On this forum of course Lionel Sanders. Lol
Besides ralert. I guess Lothar leder would be a strong contender. Buston
without his car accident another one
Females me thinks Nicola sprig I personally think she would be the best ever. But I don't think we will ever see her.

If you really want to do something, you'll find a way.
If you don't, you'll find an excuse.

Agree with raelert

Rachel Joyce performs well in Kona but is just shy from the top rung.

There there is people like fvl, Leanda cave and Pete Jacobs who win it once and are nowhere near it since

He’s won everything besides kona. His cv rivals anyone in history we kona. I’m not a fan after watching the kona footage. Didn’t seem like a good guy. Does not take away his body of work. He was the favourite that year based on the hype.

Good shout with Spirig, the fact she has kids puts her off going long it seems.

Does Brown race well in heat? I know he's thrown down some incredible low 2:40's runs, but I think they might have been in mild weather.

Anyone else surprised Michael Raelert never blossomed into a long distance stud? So much talent, not sure why he fell off? I think someone once said that Michael was effected by Epstein Barr and has never been the same since.

Agree with Lessing. Also Pauli Kiuru from Finland.

Lieto was in the wrong place at the right time. Competing in the age of Crowie and Macca is a pretty shitty draw. If Lieto was placed in that late 90's scene he might have been able to get one.

Feels like trolling, but we definitely got robbed from seeing what he could do in 2012. The 2012 race played out in such a way that it most likely would have fit right into Lance's race plan.

Why does one have to go long to be great?

Not saying they have to go long to be great. It's a question amongst the long distance athletes. Obviously there are some legends who never touched long distance, doesn't take away from what they've don't. Ali Brownlee could retire today and be considered one of the greatest of all time, just not over the long distance.

One doesn't! But I think her bike and run is more suited to long than short plus she's at that age... and she already has a Olympic Gold medal so...
