Tell me about joining links...
I recently switched to shimano 10spd...its rather nice.

Only problem is my 9spd chain had a joining link so I could split it to clean it ...my 10spd dosen't yet.

What I need to know:

-Can I just buy and fit a joining link to an Ultegra 10spd chain or do I need to replace the chain?

-also how often do you guys replace the joining link, every time you break the chain, every tenth time etc or do these things keep going for teh life of the chain?

Get a Wipperman 10-S1.

The new Shimano 10 speed chains use a special rivet to join the chain. That rivet should NEVER be removed. If you have to break the chain, do it elsewhere on the chain. But, at least according to the Shimano directions, the new 10 speed chain is NOT meant to be taken on/off. It is a set-it-and-forget-it situation, at least, that's the way it seems.

So, either get a Wipperman, or get an Ultegra chain (assuming that does have a removable link).
