TOUGHMAN Series 2016 - Continuing to Grow!
The TOUGHMAN series is continuing to grow, including TOUGHMAN Chile Antofagasta on August 7!

I'm also excited about having TOUGHMAN Noblesville on May 21 - I'm literally a 5K run from the start/transition/finish area!

I would be excited about Toughman Noblesville as well, but I am concerned by the timing issues the race company in charged of the race has had in the past. Is anything going to be done to insure reliable results?

This may not be a question for you, but I would also be interested in how head USAT officials/referees are chosen for events. Knowing how things are done around here, the official of the race could make or break my decision to race there.

Regardless, I'm glad the sport continues to attempt to have other options than the WTC.

I am not aware of the timing issues or the referee concern, which is complete ignorance on my part - this is the first I've heard of anything. Due to my goals, schedule, bike fitting, and injuries, I haven't raced locally in a couple of years now, other than Toughman Indiana. That's definitely something well beyond my power, but I will share your sentiments with those who can do something. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I enjoyed the Richmond event this year. I thought they put on a great race. I would like to do some more of their events in the future.

I raced the Toughman event this year it was a really great event. The event was ran by a top notch crew; crew marked the course well and was easy to follow, the event started on time, and volunteers were very organized. I really enjoy smaller events that operate like a family verses larger events that operate like a business, in a family style event you are treated as a bother or sister verses a larger event where you treat like a number.

In most regions, officials indicate which events they want to officiate and notify the USAT regional coordinators. The RC then reviews the needs of the event, the capabilities to of the officials and what other events are occurring and make assignments. You can find the list of RC at the end of the USAT rules.

This is great news. It's fantastic to see the Toughman brand grow. Having raced Toughman in Westchester for many years, I can say the race organization, attention to detail and focus on the athlete's is second to none.

The craziest thing is...I know exactly who/what you're talking about. And I agree...

One time saw a local USAT official tell a little girl she couldn't participate in kids triathlon because her pink helmet with bunny ears was a "modified helmet". Her dad had to rip the bunny ears off the helmet right there in front of the little girl.

Definitely stoked to see Toughman Noblesville! My hometown and a good excuse to see my family up there. Looks like it will be around for a few years too. Awesome! Definitely in for 2017.

USAT Officials are paid to enforce the rules. While we don't necessarily always agree with the rules, it is our job to enforce them. If you don't like the helmet rules, or any rule for that matter, don't just bi#ch about it, work within the system to change the rule.

In the instance you mention, that father was told 2 days prior that the helmet with the bunny ears was not allowed. Her "coach" then told the dad the next day to not worry about the rule. At the race, dad was given the option to get a different helmet - as a matter of fact, I even offered to let him use my own kids helmet, and I believe the race management had another helmet for her to use. Dad made a decision to throw a little hissy fit and rip the ears from the helmet.

Again, if you don't like the rules, work to get them changed. Don't just complain when they are enforced at races...

In case anyone wants another great option for a half ironman in Indiana around the same time...

Toughman Noblesville just opened this week, it should be a great race. An small well ran event that is in the early part of the year to test the body and see where you are at. I love early races to check on my training to make sure I am headed in the right direction and good solid races like Toughman Series make for great events to do it. The level of the event brings in good solid field.

Agreed. There were/are a couple officials that do Muncie. Almost like they were beaten as children or something and need to take it out on everybody else now that they are all grown up.

Who runs Toughman? I was looking at AL and it says Team Magic puts it on. Does that mean each city has a different company putting it on?

You are correct. I'll try to explain this as well as I can. I'm a Toughman ambassador because I like the concept, but that doesn't mean I know all the specifics!

The Toughman series is the brainchild of Rich Izzo, who is the RD for the Toughman Championship in NY. He doesn't run all of the events - he works with other RDs who know their local market and venue. I think WTC does this with some of their events, as does Challenge. Rev3 was a bit different model in which they had their core crew at all of the races. Now that they are back, I assume it's still similar.

I guess I like to think of the Toughman series as a grassroots network of Race Directors using their local knowledge and resources. Most of the races are existing events. The Toughman brand helps provide value to the existing races by increased national exposure and the opportunity for participants to qualify for the championship.

Team Magic uses their local crew to put on the Alabama event. I have not done that race yet, but I hope to soon. Local to me, America Multisport has done a great job putting on events for many, many years in Indiana and put on the Toughman Indiana event in Richmond. Heartland Endurance will put on the new Noblesville race, which will go right by my neighborhood, so I'm excited about that. DuTriRun puts on Toughman Minnesota and Toughman Wisconsin. I did Toughman Minnesota this year, and really enjoyed it. I didn't race at NY, but was able to get out there to spectate, and really enjoyed the experience. The series is continuing to grow.

So, it's kind of a coalition of Race Directors doing what they do best. I've done a lot of races over the years - local stuff, Ironman 70.3 events, Rev3, Leadman, etc., and consider myself lucky to have choices. I have nothing against WTC, but find it interesting that the triathlon market seems to have become "Ironman vs everybody else". If "everybody else" works together we still have choices as consumers.

Here is a great article by the Lava magazine on the Toughman event in Chile this upcoming year.

It is nice to have a good solid grass root company building and getting stronger in today's market place. I am very happy to be associated with a great company like Toughman. Please, take a few minutes and go to their website and see where all their races will be held and when.

Have talked to Rich a number of times. Great guy. Great understanding of the market. The number of Half IM distance races biting the dust is amazing. So it makes sense for some RD's to work together,
share ideas, share costs to survive.

Toughman Indiana 2016 is a new race/different course than the one used in the series for 2015 right?

That is correct. It is now going to be in Noblesville. I think this will be a good thing, as it is much closer to the Indy metro area. Having lived in Noblesville for 12 years now, I hope people will enjoy this course - the run will take people through Forest Park, into downtown Noblesville, and on the White River Greenway. I really enjoy running and biking these areas.

Maybe we can have a ST party in downtown Noblesville after the race!

How is a factory helmet with bunny ears a modified helmet? Or did they put the ears on a pink helmet for her?
