StrechCordz Exercises

I don't have access to a pool for the next 6 months, but I'm not letting that deter me from training for a 70.3. With that said, I'd like to minimize the suffering in the first third of the race...so I've been looking at swim alternatives and scouring the forums. I found the following three threads:

http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=191160

http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=3175050

http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=5007643

And the product/suggestion that came up the most were "StrechCordz". Sounded great to me - I checked out their website and the product appears to be specifically designed for swim training. I ordered a "modular set" which came with the cords (surgical-tubing-type resistance bands) as well as different doodads to hook on the end (ankle straps, wrist straps, etc) and a fun little carrying bag...but no real instructions to speak of.

They remind me of the generic resistance bands I used at Physical Therapy while rehabbing an ankle break a few years ago. I know some basic strength exercises to do with them, but nothing as far as swim-specific movements goes. I understand there is a swimming speedwork book that touches on these, but I don't have internet access and if I order the book it will take a month to reach me...so...help me, ST!!

I struggle to get to the pool, which is little help as I'm a fairly average swimmer. I've got some stretch cords tethered to the garage door, and I keep it really simple. Back as flat as I can get it, in line with the cords which are fairly horizontal. And I just replicate the swim catch and pull, high elbow, pull right through to the hip. I'm on the lookout for a cheap weights bench which would probably make it easier to focus on the pull mechanics, however I feel I'm getting a pretty good core stability workout by holding the flat back position. I'm aware this doesn't work the recovery action, but the pull is where all the force is exerted.

Pretty much this.

No substitute for getting wet, but needs must..

Ya, Sheila T. does a great job of explaining stretch cord technique in this video. Unless you want to spend $1000 on a Vasa Trainer, the stretch cords are the way to go. It will still take awhile to get your feel for the water back when you get back in the pool, but your muscle strength/endurance will be in good shape. The cords will wear your arms out if you do it right for 45-60 min workouts. You can simulate 100s and 200s by taking same number of strokes per repeat, then resting x seconds, e.g. if you take say 16 str/lgth for 100 scy, that's 64 pulls, then rest 15 sec and repeat for 10 or 20 x 100.

I've used the video below a bit too but Shelia's explanation is pretty much similar. The main exception here is the use of full stroke mechanics.

I own these and for the price you're pretty much golden. I will say to keep them lubed if they are in the swim bag as they can get rusty and oxidize a bit if neglected.
