Sodium loss rates
I haven't been able to find this info, so I thought I would ask here. I had a sweat test done about 9 months ago and this is what the test said. It stated that I had a sweat loss rate of 1.2L/hr which is about 41oz/hr. The sodium content was 1150mg/hr. The guy that performed the test said that I'm fairly low on the sodium content scale and about average on the sweat loss rate. However, whenever I sweat, I'm completely drenched and my shirt, hat, and/or shorts are covered in white salt. Does anyone have data on what the average sodium and sweat loss rates are for athletes?

Thanks.

you had a sweat test done !

tell me you're pulling my leg here...... :-)

surely there are more productive things to do in life than to get a formal sweat test...

I also sweat a lot so I take 1 x 600mg sodium tab ( Toppin ) per hour during races of 1/2 IM or above. no cramps for me, just lots of sweat & dried salt on me.

sweat test...... " only in America ".....

At the time, it was free because the guy doing the test was doing it for a research project or something.

I'd do it in a heart beat if I could find someplace to do it and it didn't cost an arm and a leg.

I've heard numbers from 400 to 4000mg/hr. If you doing a 12hr IM that's a difference of 43.2 grams. I'm no doctor but I'm guessing that hitting the "middle" on this is just not good enough.

On the Timbermantri website there is an article by Jason Gootman "4 Ironman Training Rules" and it says

-Consume 1,000 mg of sodium for every 32 fluid ounces of water you consume.

Not sure if that helps!! :-)

I'm bumping this up.

Now, here's what I found out. I have two contradicting pieces of evidence. #1 is the results of the test which states that I'm actually fairly low on the sodium loss rate. #2 is when I actually workout, I'm completely covered in salt when I'm done which is usually a good indication of a high sodium loss rate. Now, I'm trying to figure out which case is true so that I can adapt my nutrition appropriately.

Thanks.

Is this a cramping issue you're trying to address?

Everything I've read maxes out at about 1,000 mg/hr. but this is from conversations and 3rd hand info, no studies to back it up. I have a severe cramping issue and I will probably push over the 1,000/hr in high heat workouts, of course combined with other electrolytes, mg and calcium. I'm going to try the infinit with a max load of electrolytes and add to that, hoping to decrease the number of pills I have to manage.

I don't really have a cramping issue. I did cramp on an aquajog on Tuesday, though. The only time that I really cramp is my calves while swimming. I've cramped maybe twice in 2 years while running.
