Silverman 2014

Just got the email...looks like a great way to end the 2914 season. Question for those who have done the old race, is Lake Mead at Boulder Harbor really 78 to 82 degrees in October?

ummm I did not see anything on the ironman website other than the notice stating they were going to rotate 70.3 WC.

Do they have a date on registration? Cost?

Thanks Chris,
Just got the link......
I want to get in on this party. I might have to get sub 190lbs for next season. 2 "Racable" 70.3 in hopefully warm weather is doable.
Excited!!!

I did Silverman in 08 and 09 and the water was in the high 60's was fully comfortable in a wetsuit. The original silverman swim was a little further up the road from boulder beach at the marina but I can't see the temps being that different.

Well, there was a Silverman half with this swim at least. Just not a WTC brand. Too bad, we likely won't get the epic swag and share a beer with Frank at the finish. But to the extent that a RD influences the race, WTC or not, should be a good one

A lot of people do. the half was always on my "i'll get to it" list then disappeared, so this will have to do

The epic swag was great....at this point I'd be happy with just getting the epic course back

x10.

I did the Silverman Full in 2010 and it remains the best of the 17 iron-distance races I've started. I spoke to Frank in 2011 when we returned for the ITU LC Worlds and he knew of the interest for the Full to return. I believe the issue at the time was support from the local council / government as it could apparently only support one event per year. If this nothing has changed I would be surprised if anything more than the 70.3 will be on the schedule for 2014.

Honestly, I'm okay with this. I've been to a lot of different WTC races and the best part of Silverman, for us at least, was that it combined a WTC sensibility with a 'grassroots' feel. Perhaps I'm simply getting old but I never wanted Silverman to ever become part of the Ironman family for this reason alone.

Water was always upper 60s, low 70s - perfectly comfortable. Original start was at Hemmingway Harbor - loved that mile long, super steep climb to wake up to riding after the swim... Boulder Beach is where most tri's in Lake Mead start, they don't have to shut down the major harbor for all the boaters. The bike course is not the same as the old Silverman Course, and quite a bit easier without the Three Sisters and the bike path (in my opinion - have not done the new course, but have plenty of experience on the old course.) And the run is also much different - we used to have a 13.1 loop, with more plenty of hills. It wasn't the climbing that was hard, it was the descents. For people who have done the new course, we would drop down Paseo Verde to Valle Verde (past the park where the turn around is), then climb up Horizon Ridge drive to where the turn around for the new course is. Drop down Green Valley, cross the road onto the bike path, then climb up (I forgot the name of the road) above the Target on Green Valley, keep climbing... A short little descent, turn around, climb back to the high point, drop all the way below the Green Valley Station Casino, run through the District, short little descent, climb back up to the bike path and then cross over to Green Valley - A lot harder of a course for sure.

It would be nice to have the real Silverman, complete with a full back. I'd do another road tri if that came back. But the Silverman Gang (the only ones who have completed all six editions of the full) have jointly decided that this isn't really "Silverman" We were spoiled. There will be a reunion if the full comes back though...

It isn't Silverman if its not 140.6.

If that's where the Pumpkinman Tri is held, the water was plenty comfortable for a no-wetsuit swim. I'm pretty sure that's the only way I had a speedy finish there -- no wetsuit.

I share the feelings that the lack of a 140.6 option makes this something other than the Silverman we knew (and loved). Also, the whole flavor of the event will be different under the WTC than it was under Frank. For those reasons, I don't blame any former Silverman athletes from staying away.

I had a conversation about Silverman two years ago with someone very much in-the-know in Ironman circles, and whose name virtually everyone on this forum would recognize. He told me that the Silverman 140.6 course was too hard to attract enough participants to make it worthwhile, even if it were a WTC event. (It sounded as if there had been discussions about doing just that.) He also said that the old Silverman half needed 1,500 participants for the race to survive, and it wasn't coming close to that. (It only attracted about 600 in its final year.)

I'd love to see a return of the old Silverman, but I don't think it will ever happen.

I was just getting into triathlons about 5 years ago, and completed the Silverman half in 2010 as my first half distance tri. It was great course with the three sisters on the bike and the "hilly" one loop run coming back through the District in GVR. I still have great memories of that race and I still have the visor, shirt, and backpack!!

That is when I learned about what Silverman is all about. After the race the Silverman facebook page showed a guy that got a tattoo of the Silverman logo after finishing the full distance that year. I think the race was certainly gaining momentum and that's why WTC snatched it up.

I don't think the new race will ever match the old edition..... although I am signing up today and am looking forward to getting back out there. Many of competitors who raced the full distance Silverman want "another" shot at the course - I just want "a" shot

I am a recent convert into triathlons so I unfortunately missed out on the original Silverman races. From everything I've read, and living in Henderson during those years, I remember fondly how much the city appreciated the race. I had friends who did it and I remember thinking how insane that course sounded.

As a 6 year local I'd be happy to answer any questions you guys have about the city. I'm more of a low key, off strip kind of person so I may be of some assistance for those looking to actually remember their time spent here.

Where was all the enthusiasm when it wasn't IM 70.3 Silverman? Why weren't people proudly posting that they were in the day registration started back then? I expected this, but kinda disappointed. All the anti WTC comments, then the lemmings appear...

Rant over!

Enthusiasm? This thread is less than a page. Pretty weak "enthusiasm"

Personally, I do races that appeal to me, WTC, non WTC, whatever.

Understand what you're saying, Chris. And I pick races for the same reasons - fun. And now - how much singletrack. :)

But having been a mostly lurker here for years before I actually joined, I never saw people posting they were registering for Silverman the day it opened. That's where I was coming from with my comment. It's more a reflection of people jumping register for the WTC version when the reaction to the original was "meh - not worth doing." I know some of that was the difficulty of the course - esp with the trend towards easier and easier courses.
