Renting Race Wheels - IMWI

I'm thinking about renting a set of race wheels for IMWI.

I'm not sure what the best choice of wheels would be for me. From past discussions on this it seems that the general concensus is that if you have a disc that's the way to go for IMWI. So that leads me to trying to rent a set of 909s or 999s.

However, I've only ever ridden clinchers, and would have to learn how to change tubulars before the race - or go with a set of 404s or 808s.



Anybody have some input on what they'd do in my situation?

I would also stick with clinchers. There always seems to be enough stress race week and trying to learn how to change tubulars just seems like an unnecessary stress.

Well think about it for an extra minute more. If you went tubular, and you wanted to carry a spare, then you would have to buy a tubular spare, which runs anywhere from $60 to $129 depending on what you desire to carry, along with some glue to prep it. If you complete the race without any flats, you know have an expensive tubular that you can't use on your regular clincher wheels back home, unless of course you are considering to converting to tubies for race wheels in the near future.

There is a weight savings with tubies over clinchers, but you probably get more bang for the effort for aero rims, either clicnher or tubular, over non-aero rims.

I'm sure a good rental vendor would also supply the spare. Go tubies, the change of a tubular is very unlikely, and also incredibly easy compared to clinchers. The ride and handling will make you a believer, and you'll probably end up buying a set. Not even a question, since you've put so much into this, leave no stone unturned.
