Hello milesthedog and All,

What am I missing .... I read UCI banned supertuck effective 1 April 2021?

I am surprised by the delta between the 9 percent and 17 percent positions. The big difference between 9 and 17 seems to be the seat post sitting up like a mast in the wind behind the butt vs the seatpost and butt ending up as one unit that the wind sees

Just looking ... it seems the Pantini position has the weight further back and the advantage of using your weight on the seat for additional stability ... although slipping further back could be a problem without a fender to protect from the back wheel .....

Making an drop seat for the Pantini position and a sturdy fender over the back wheel shouild not be too difficult ...

And a bit of bicycle gymnastics training .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTymedv_4RE

Cheers, Neal

Assuming all these position numbers are accurate the 12 percent position seems to offer the best speed vs stability tradeoff. Add the dropper post to the 12 percent and you win Milano San Remo (or maybe it gives you enough of a gap to hog the draft of the motos, but either way, you gotta be at the front to get the moto benefit)

What does the 5cm rule specify? Thanks!

Nealhe: in those diagrams. A dropper isn’t shown. A dropper would allow for something in between the 14% rearward and 17% supertuck positions BUT could be maintained for longer because turns could be taken safely, something neither of those two positions afford.

As for losing power while pedaling… then don’t go down as low when you pedal but slam it when it’s too steep to pedal. In that course, he was pedaling most of the time, so probably not applicable.

The UCI 5cm rule is that the saddle tip must be no closer than 5cm behind the bottom bracket unless you’ve had a morphological exemption. That probably wouldn’t be an issue for most pro’s although some sprinters or shorter riders do run saddles at that limit.

It looks like Mohoric broke the record on the descent by 13 seconds. (3:47 down to 3:34)

The corner he takes around 1:23 into the video is a thing of beauty. Chapeau!

According to the UCI's New Rules Explanation Guide, the Pantani position was also banned:

with a dropper, all of those positions are obsolete, unnecessary and slower when you factor in taking corners with the saddle slammed. The biggest plus is that it’s safer.

there is a GCN video from July 2016 where Dan Lloyd compares the time to descend a 4K hill with and without using a dropper post (it has been retrofitted to a Canyon Ultimate). He averages 10 seconds faster (mean of 2) with the dropper post - over about a 4.5 min run.....and then offers other comments on increased confidence and stability and predicts it will be coming to a grand tour soon.

There's a good reason I've used a dropper on the mountain bike for about 15 years ! Yet again roadies only a decade behind. (Roadies will be eventually disc brakes next... watch this space 🤔)

Given that most manufacturers' highest-end bikes don't use round seatposts, and it would cost a crap tonne of money to redesign the bikes to do so, I don't see droppers becoming nearly as ubiquitous as some are speculating, especially given that the circumstances where they may provide a clear advantage are pretty limited.

The BMC RAD post is non-round! it goes up and down with a remote and is integrated and air-sprung and indexed. the future.

worth checking out: https://www.bmc-switzerland.com/intl_en/rad

And Eightpins who says they're coming out with a gravel version: https://www.eightpins.com/en/#

and don't forget the 40mm Enve dropper (unreleased) which has to be the lightest out there: https://www.velonews.com/...front-end-from-enve/

Interesting, I wasn’t aware. Still, very expensive to either redesign road bike frames or develop proprietary dropper posts for a handful of top pros and/or dentists

this has to be akin to walking into an F1 car forum and wanting a Camry-priced option .... I mean, isn't this the dentist convention? or did I stumble into the jean short gravel bikerumor-comments-section conference room down the hall?

Maybe they could use one from their dental chair?

Most of the major bike manufacturers design new frames along a model line every couple of years. It'd just get rolled into that existing process.

And "dentists" are how these manufacturers make their money. All those top-spec Tarmacs that are ridden at Thursday Worlds and gran fondos, etc.

I'm in the "dentist" category. I'd get one. I'm very long-legged 6'4" meaning I have ridiculous seatpost height. It puts my Cg way, way up high, which matters noticeable on descents. I adore the dropper on my MTB.

Someone is going to fly off the road/cause a major crash at 30kph using this in a race trying to win on the downhill, and then the UCI will ban these too.

my prediction is that 2022/23 is to custom aero shaped dropper posts what 2020/21 was to custom aerobar extensions. Sunday had three messages in my inbox asking if it was possible to do :D

Note: I did see the carbon gurus, Darimo, make a custom integrated dropper last year, and I think it had Eightpins internals…

That's sweet, Darimo makes some cool stuff.

I was thinking about grabbing an office chair from a dumpster and seeing what I could rough out :D
