I remember that clearly from last year... thinking "shouldnt I be going faster down this hill?"
The headwind was so lame that I had to pedal to get to their speed limit... talk about a bummer of a downhill after that S.O.B. of a hill!!!

Triathlon was started by a bunch of kids at the swimming hole, who heard the ice cream man. They swam to their bikes, chased down the truck, jumped off their bikes, and ran to be first in line.

And in T1, "no gear allowed on the ground" Looks like all bike gear hung in bags next the the bike? And run gear hung in bags too?
-------
Chris
I did not see that in the athletes guide....did I miss it?

It's buried way in there in the bike rules, the numbered paragraphs. Can't recall where it is right now but it actually says nothing on the ground, has to be in the bag or on the bike. I'll look for it tomorrow if you don't find it

Not to get off topic, but can anyone recommend a good spectator running route during the race leaving from T1/T2? My sister is spectating while I race and wants to get in a 6 mile run while I'm on the bike......main requirements are leaving from race area and not tooo many turns as she isn't super great with directions. We are not familiar with the area so I'm not sure what the options are close to but not on the course...... Thanks!

From other races I've done... it has to be in the bag. They'll collect the bags and deliver them to the pick up area. So if you forget to put your goggles or wetsuit in the bag... you ain't getting it.

So anything you want to keep post swim pre bike, put in the bag (goggles, wetsuit, fins, booties, cap, paddles)... :D

7. Bike shoes must be placed inside the Bike Gear Bag or attached
to the pedals. Helmets and other cycling gear must be in the Bike Gear Bag or on the bike (nothing may be on the ground). Shoes and shirt must be worn at all times.

Chris, Found it.

Thanks

The easiest would be for her to just run along the beach heading south for 3 miles and then north again. The tide is a 0.5 low tide around noon, so the beach should be fairly wide late in the morning. Another option would be for her to just run along the San Luis Rey trail which is a paved bike/ped trail that heads inland from just a bit north of T2 or just south of T1. No cars or stops at all on that trail.

Why not just run the 3 miles of the course and back while everyone else is out riding? If I remember correctly, pdestrians were allowed on the sidewalk while we were in the street. Or am I losing memory in my older age?

I thought about telling her to just run the course, but then I thought that might not be kosher. I don't know if they are trying to get things set up, keep it clear for the first pros etc.... it doesn't seem quite right to do that??? If there are sidewalks along the run course for pedestrians, that might work though....

If it's the same course, then there is a sidewalk almost the whole way if I remember correctly. I would turn around though before getting too far into the neighborhood.

I REALLY like that run course, too bad I performed so terribly when I was out there. Stomach issues, penalty (drafting up the big climb...LOL), trying to pace out Sam McGlone on my first loop (Ha, 6:15 is NOT my cup-o-tea). I just wasn't fit enough.

I'd like to think I can go back to Oside one day and be fit enough to perform the way I think I should perform there.

That being said, your sister will dif the first 2 miles of the run route as it is along the water and beach. I remember other runners being out there during the race too.

Course is mostly the same. But it has changed a bit including two trips out on the pier. It's the same general area.

The course map shows an out and back onto the pier, however at a course brief she gave to TCSD, Race Director Gina Thomas said you are really turning right at the at the top of the ramp on the pier, and you do not run out onto the actual boardwalk part of the pier. The purpose of this section is simply to transition between Pacific St down to the Strand and back up.

Same here. Maybe they had to address some permitting issues, but this seems unnecessarily more complicated.

Chris, Found it.

Thanks

So, just to confuse things, the Cal 70.3 site has in it's rules and regs the following Guess we'll find out on race day. Doesn't make much sense to not allow them on the ground:

7. Shoes must be in the bike gear bag or placed in the athlete’s transition spot. Shoes may be attached to the pedals. Shoes and shirt must be worn at all times.
