Re: Night sweats [Aunt Em] [ In reply to ]

With me, it's entirely hormonal. For just about my entire adult life, first day of my period features 4-6 hours where I feel like I'm utterly roasting followed by 4-6 hours where I'm totally freezing. and then 2-3 times a year waking up with night sweats.

The last time it happened was about two weeks ago, and it was actually kind of nice. I'd done a half matathon the day before and ended up mildly hypothermic (felt find during the race but started shaking badly from cold on the way home) and the roast cycle/night sweats actually got me to the point where my core didn't feel cold anymore.

Same with me too. While the night sweats aren't great, I do rush to the scale the next morning because I can count on the loss of about a pound or two of water weight.

This is hilarious. I figured since I needed to get this checked out I'd get my annual tune-up at the same time. For a physical the next appt is 4/11. For this single problem, I got in on Tuesday.

My night sweats are almost always the consequence of too many carbs. If we have a carb-rich dinner and DH and I split a bottle of wine, and if I haven't had enough exercise that day and/or haven't hydrated enough, I get night sweats with a vengeance.

I'm 30 YO, and have experienced the same thing for a couple of years. I hope it's not pre-menopause symptom! LOL!

How many animals do you have in your bed at any one time including your husband?

I sometimes get nights sweats but have never thought about it enought to try and correlate it with anything else. I do find that a thin fleece blanket really regulates my body temp. I seem to feel just right when that is the only bedding I use.

Last night I had the BF and two cats curled up against me and was sweating my ass off. He left around 5 a.m., I booted the kitties outside, went back to bed and couldn't get warm. Go figure.

Its not the critters. This happens when the hubby is away too. This goes beyond being too warm, I can just toss the covers off with that. These are soaking wet. I have to change my t-shirt beause it is totally wet and then I'm freezing. The sheets can be damp too. Its pretty gross.

Dr. appt tomorrow, I'll let everyone know what she says since several others deal with this too.

This one got me out of lurk mode, which I've been in for months now.

I get night sweats periodically, too. I actually usually blame them on workouts. Like maybe I'm running a little hotter or something with all the blood flow recovery, etc.

Or my body is fighting off an illness (before I actually "get sick").

Or...I am actually sleeping well for once and got too warm under covers, but didn't wake up enough to adjust (remove a layer).

Those three seemed to be realistic reasons to me.

I just turned 40 this month. She's pretty sure it is hormonal but agreed that it made sense to screen for all the possibilities. I got really sick a couple weeks back and it really knocked me out. That is really rare so there is a slim possibility there is more going on. With me they are random and not tied to my monthly cycle or exercise. Last night I was hot but I wasn't slick so there is a big difference between overheating and the nightsweats I get.

Menopause may just be sneaking up on me.

I'm been pretty much OK. Nasty cold/flu that took a long time to recover from but otherwise fine.

Likely hormones.

Jen, you are dehydrated. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but it is a common occurance. Particularly with endurance athletes.

Jen:

I'm guessing your estrogen is down.

I've been battling hot flashes, insomnia and palpitations since I was in my very early 30's. I am now 45. My normal ob/gyn refused to believe that low estrogen could be a cause at my age at say 31, and refused to test me. In my mid-30's, when I was married and could not get preggers, I went to a fertility specialist who ran every expensive test in the book, and my estrogen (estradiol?) on Day 3 was about half of nornal (40) normal is around 75-100, but they did not think it was an issue (they told me it was stress, yeah right, go ride 80 miles and tell me how much "stress" you got left!)

After some very expensive treatments, no baby, and a marriage in the crapper, I insisted they test me again. Voila, came back at 27 this time and they put me on a Estrogen patch. Within weeks, I was "back to normal" sleeping through the night, able to lose fat, no more hot flashes, etc. It was awesome. Then at about 40, things started to go south, and the gyn tested me again, and this time my progesterone was in the crapper (1/3 of normal).

So now I am on full time Vivelle patches and bio-identical progestrone cream as needed in the back half of the cycle.

I still have nights of hot flashes and insomnia, particularly on the last 5-7 days before my period. And I went through a period of months with 5-6 week cycles, too.

The fact of the matter is that endurance athlete's have less body fat, and estrogen is stored in body fat. No body fat = no estrogen. And you don't have to be super skinny to be affected. I certainly am not. When I injured my back, could not exercise and had surgery, and gained about 10 pounds, I had zero issues with sleep, at al, but as I am getting fitter, training harder and getting skinnier, it's starting to come back. I think it may be time to UP my estrogen dosage (I have been on 0.075 patch for 8-9 years now).

The worst for me is the insomnia. I can handle the hot flashes by not being able to sleep is a crusher.

I'm sure its hormonal imbalance too. We are also checking testosterone levels so it is a full panel. My doc is awesome and will run tests that I ask her to and are reasonable.

I'm calling on Monday to get my results.

Hi all -

Test results are back and they are pretty interesting.
Estrogen = Low. Here comes menopause!
Progesterone = Low
Testosterone = 0. I didn't even know that was possible. Weird.
Vitamin D = very low. I need some SUN!! Also, supplements
Cholesterol = 256!!!! I have NEVER had it that high. Good cholesterol is right on target but the bad cholesterol is really high. Holy shit.
Thyroid = Fine.

So, nothing "serious" but things are definately not right. Talk about hormones out of whack! The girl hormones throw off the testosterone and cholesterol. Diet and artificial hormones are the cure. I'm getting the full results in the mail so I can share numbers once I get them.

ok. so does that explain the night sweats?
i guess i should check mine out. my sweats definately feel like HOT FLASHES then i sweat. they come and go during the day some and several times at night. my hormones are probably really wacked. my periods stopped in August ( that has been the only nice thing about it!)

glad it was not anything more serious. will you take hormone replacement?

Go get the bloodwork done. It won't hurt. Well, except for the needle prick :-)

I'm still deciding on hormone replacement. Basically she would put me on the pill but I intentionally got off of it last summer. After 21 years on it I might have gotten my body so used to the artificial hormones it doesn't want to make its own. I'm sure the Drs on here will have an opinion on that.

I'm relieved it wasn't anything serious either. It is all a hassle though and will take some adjustments to how I live. Like, regular vacations to sunny destinations!

I'm up for it! My family used to meet on Sanibel Island for one week every winter but we haven't done it for the last two years. Clearly I need to come up with a good substitution. Last year I went to Maui, nothing this year. Hmmm.....
