Irrational Dislike of Seaweed
Anyone else have issues with swims because of seaweed and icky lake bottoms? It's not enough to deter me, but ugh, when I have to swim through lake grass it gives me the heeby geebies! Any tips on getting over this? It's ridiculous, I fully realize this, but it's the biggest hindrance to my ow swims. I can handle the crowding, getting hit, waves, wind, cold, etc., but throw in sea weed and I go into minor panic mode.

There are a whole bunch of superstitious "dangers" that surround swimming.

The fear of getting tangled in lake weeds and dragged under water is one of them.

Lets list supernatural sswimming dangers.
1) You get cramps if you swim after eating.
2) Weeds will drag you under water.
3) Undertows will drag you underwater.
4) Once you get caught in an undertow you can't get out of it
5) Water is much more dangerous in a "flash flood" than in other circumstances. (According to this theory a class V rapid is relatively safe. Whereas, a gentle desert wash that has water in it 2 days a year- is a sure way to die).
6) Lightning seeks out water rather than roofs, trees, polls, mountains - even when the water it is hidden in doors.

Can I add the YMCA's policy of closing indoor pools when there's lightening or thunder outside ?

Yes especially that.

But also lightening in general.

"So you are kicking me out of the pool because there may have been lightning 36 miles away. "

"I will get out and walk home. And have a 0.00002% risk of getting struck. That's 10 times the risk of me getting struck in the pool!"

The thing about this stuff is that unless you think about it you will tend to believe it. Other people's irrational fears are very powerful.

I was told growing up that one should avoid swimming where there are sea weeds and underwater branches.
That this stuff would tangle you up and pull you under.

WTF

Stuff is going to maliciously wrap itself around me and pull me under?

What makes sea grass or an underwater branch different from regular grass or branches?

Can't I just untangle myself, like I do when I trip in long grass on land?

Does water impart evil spirits to grass and branches?

Why is a flash flood water different from other moving water of similar depth, volume and pitch in a permanent stream?

Does flash flood water fear drying out and therefore rush faster?
Does the water say - "I don't usually flow here. I better book it to some place safer for water?"

Lastly, why is lightning out to get me?

Doesn't lightning usually look for the shortest distance between sky and land?

Why does it make exceptions for swimming pools?

Does it say;
"Well it is 3000 m from here to that transmission line. And 12000 m to the public pool over there.
F#ck it. There are people in that pool. Let's get en.
What's an extra 9000m?"

Notably, "swimming in the Rio Olympics" did not make this list.

There's no getting around that but by gritting your teeth and swimming in sea weed. The more you do it the less you'll dislike it.

It's not rediculous because that shit is disgusting.

I went to the beach with my family last summer and my then 4 year old daughter picked up a piece that was like 5 feet long and draped it around her neck and said "look daddy, a scarf!"

I seriously almost puked on her.

You get over any phobia by exposure. Swim through weed and muck every day!
