Question for Shawn the Asics guy
I am currently wearing the Asics Gel Foundation (I severely pronate). I love these shoes, but see that they are no longer available. I bought the last remaining pairs I could find online. What is replacing these shoes? Any recommendations?

It is so frustrating to find a shoe you love and to have it discontinued! Happens with every brand, not blaming Asics.

Thanks.

Lori, they're still available. We've added a roman numeral to the end of the name, but you can still get it. Click here, it'll take you to the shoe's page on our website. Good luck.

Shawn,

I train in Nimbus VI's, bought two pairs this summer. I understand the VII's are an improvement. What is the skinny on the changes and what Asic racing shoe would complement the Nimbus trainers? Looking for something lighter to race in.

Not much difference at all. I think the fit is a little better, but nothing too noticeable. I don't wear the Nimbus, except just around, so I'm hardly an expert on that shoe. As for a racing flat, depends on the distance, speed/pace, your weight, foot strike, etc.. Most of MOPers would benefit from wearing something like the DS-Trainer...it offers cushioning, support, and is lighter than most training shoes. Good luck.

Hey Shawn,

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but quick question. Someone here mentioned that the Asics GT-2100 model was being discontinued? Not sure if this is rumor or not.

If it is being discontinued, then why? Seems a lot of people wear it. And what will be the replacement?

Thanks

It is being discontinued and will be replaced by the GT-2110. Basically, the same shoe with a couple of updates/improvements. It just won the 'Editor's Choice' award in the latest Runner's World shoe review. Every year, we update the GT-2000 series and add numbers to the shoe (2070, 2080, 2090, 2100, and so on).

Shawn....question...

I run in Asics Nimbus VII. For the last five months, I've been running in the silver/orange color, Nimbus VII.

The other day I went into my running shoe store to buy another pair of Nimbus VII's in silver/orange, but they only had the blue/tan color. I was then told to wait for the next shipment for the silver ones because apparently a recent internal secret Asics Nimbus Study by the Asics Scientists concluded that the silver/orange ones were 19-25 minutes faster in marathons than the blue colored ones, regardless of who is running in them, and that some of your scientists in Japan, had confirmed this.

It has something to do with something called "flubber."

Can you comment on this?

All I can say is it requires one to own a Cervelo with Zipp 808s, wear a $200 aero helmet, and to train very little. Only then, does the 'flubber' effect of the silver ones actually work in a marathon. I know, I know it sounds crazy, but the Japanese scientists are very smart and that's the only thing they could induce from the study.

Ok, seriously, the orange/silver ones are only 16mins faster in a marathon...your numbers were a bit exaggerated.

Great, thanks Shawn. Would you recommend I stick with the Foundation VI? I've also seen the Evolution and it looks like a sweet shoe, but not sure of the difference between it and the Foundation VI. Is it also a good shoe for overpronators?

Thanks!

You could try the Evolution, very similar shoes but fit/feel different.

Shawn -- an OT message to throw in here...

I don't know if you are the one to thank, but the schwag Asics put up at the Challenged Athletes Half IM is much appreciated! I got an Asics long sleeve running shirt and a great Asics jacket with an embroidered race logo on it.

Good for you guys, and I want you to know we consumers out here take note of who supports our sport and our favorite charities.

Hey Shawn!

I guess I wasn't the only one wiggin' when I heard that they're discontinuing GT 2100!

Was cool to meet you @ NYCM expo. Didja get to do the 5 Beers/ 5 Borough tour?

It was my 2nd slowest finish ever - but considering my lack of preparation, I'm OK w/ my result.

Take care!

I was on a plane home long before the finishers hit the tape...no 5 beers, 5 boroughs for me. That would involve running a marathon, c'mon : )

Ah, no worries. I enjoy answering questions and being of some help to my fellow triathletes. Besides, anytime we're not talking about bikes is a good change ; ) Don't forget, it's all about the run.

Hello ShawnF

I bought a men's size 8.5 Gel-Kayano X from someone who got the wrong size [I couldn't refuse when he gave it to me for 50USD]. I want to buy a Kayano again, but this time in MY SIZE. What equivalent size should I purchase in women's sizing?

Thanks!

awesome reply to the Nimbus question;) I need to use something like that the next time someone asks what happened to a particular color!

Question that has been posed a lot to me lately: "that Asic's tri shoe, when is that coming out?"

I'm assuming the Gel Forrester (think that was the name) is not an American market shoe but if it is when will we see it and will we be able to see it from miles away due to the day-glo neon colors. I also heard these colors allow you to forgo the lightsticks during late night Ironman finishes and can temporarily blind your competition when passing if you do one of those little jump in the air heel clicks when you pass that Welchie used to do across the line.

Please advise, especially on the jumping heel clicks.

That's tough, but typically there is a size and a half difference, so a 10? Either try them on before you buy them or order them from a reputable on-line store that will allow returns and exchanges.

Tai,

Assure your customers that those shoes will not be available in the North American market anytime in the near future, dare I say ever. It's basically, DS-Racer tooling with an open mesh upper and a speed lacing system. You can save some weight by getting the DS-Racers and adding elastic laces. I know, there is a small group that love the 'skittles'-like color scheme. Trust me, that group is very small.
