Q for those that wear Specialized Trivents.
I am looking for some road shoes and would like to get some opinions from those that are currently using Specialized trivent triathlon shoes.

Any favorite brand and model?

Thanks beforehand.

I wear the Specialized road shoes. They have the same footbed as the Trivents. I have a half size bigger road shoes since I wear socks with them.

I have trivent tri shoes and specialized road shoes. I like the road shoes a bit better - just get a better fit with more straps/buckles. I love their shoes (and most specialized stuff). If you need to know size comparison - let me know - I'll dig around for the boxes (I think I bought the same size as I race tri's with socks)

I like my specialized road shoes (BG Carbon pro = 3 straps with the top one a ratchet system ) better than my sidis.

I did break the little plastic piece for the ratchet system - e-mailed specialized and they mailed me 3-4 of them for free.

Thanks to all for your interesting comments.

So it seems that you could wear the same size shoe for tri and road versions. No problem buying a half size bigger I guess, just to be on the safe side. They are for my kid and he is still growing fast.

Good to know about the plastic thing for the ratchet system as living in Mexico sure complicates things. Maybe I could ask for an extra one in the shop that I will buy them.

Sergio,

Mine broke as my shoes were crammed in a box full of tri stuff for a race - it got bent backwards and snapped. Now if I pack the shoes - I just rethread the little plastic piece through the ratchet so its safe....

Sergio,

I use both the items u are asking about. I have used the Trivents for 1 IM and use Speedplays for both my road & tri bikes.

TriVents - Love them as the carbon sole is really stiff and drafty (keeps your feet dry). What i do not like about them is that i came from using a 3 strap Sidi shoes on my road bike, and the 3 strap is much better as it really allows for the shoe to get snug & comfy.

Speedplays - I own the Zero Stainless and love them as they are so easy to get into. Just stomp down and u clip in real easy. Double-sided also helps alot. I'm almost always one of the first few to clip-in in a group ride. No issues with the pedals.

Sidi Ergos with Specialised BG footbed. Sidis are like custom made slippers without the Rocket 7 pricetag, superb.

I also use and like Specialized shoes (I use the S-works road with the Boa lacing system) with Speedplay Zero Titanium Pedals with no problems. I just cut the "cable" yesterday by accident on some metal and was happy to find lots of replacement parts online from Specialized, very inexpensive ($5.99 for 2 replacement cables). Come to think of it, my new fav seat is also a Specialized (the Toupe 143 - white of course). They do make some nice stuff.

I use the trivent shoe, but as your question is for road shoes I use the Nike Poggio 3. Pretty comfortable shoe, 3 velcro closure. All black. No complaints. I use speedplays on the Nike's and am thinking about going back to speedplay's on the trivent's also. If you like the trivent shoe I'd stay with Specialized. I really like their shoes and would have gone with something in their road line, but the price was right on the Nike's.

After reading all your kind posts, I think I will buy the Specialized "road" version of the Trivents.

Sergio Jr. rode the Road and Triathlon Nationals using the Trivents with SS Speedplay pedals. He finished 4th in the road race and 1st in the tri race. He is not blaming his shoes for not winning the road nationals, but I guess that the specific road version should not hurt his road pedaling at all :)

He loves his Trivent more than any other triahtlon shoe. Before the Trivent he used Carnac and he says that there is no comparison. Maybe the only change will be the color as I believe that you can get the Speialized road version in black.

Thanks for all, you were very helpful.

Sergio

I had a hard time getting the cleat base of the old slimline cleat to fit flat on the sole of the Specialized Comp Road shoe (the non-carbon sole). But maybe the carbon sole or the newer snap-shim cleat work better. I also could not get the cleat positioned are far back on the sole as I wanted. Thus I have abandoned using Speedplay with those shoes for the time being.

Sergio,

Is there a question in there?

You quoted my message yet you did not type anything.

Yes, there was a question in that post. I was in a hurry and did not check the post after I replied. I bought the Specialized BG Carbon Pro road shoes. I asked the salesman for the ratchets and they were $40 a pair (you need on L and one R buckle for the 2007 model). You mentioned that "I did break the little plastic piece for the ratchet system - e-mailed specialized and they mailed me 3-4 of them for free". I was wondering if you broke the buckle or the plastic straps of the ratchet system. If it was the ratchet then Specilaized sent you $120-160 worth of spare parts :) They did not have the shoes in white. I bought them in black color at Cynergy Cycles in Santa Monica. I had to get back unexpectedly to Mazatlan so Sergio Jr will try them on a little bit earlier than expected. Thanks again to all for your advise. Sergio I[/reply]

Sergio,

I broke the plastic piece/strap that slides into the ratchet. Its just a 2 1/2 inch piece of plastic....so I think its pretty cheap...

OK, that makes it clear. Thanks for the comment.

Sergio put his new road shoes on a few minutes ago and he looked up at me with a similing face but shaking his head. He says that even though they are the same size, the road version of the Trivent feels much tighter. He has gone trough several pairs of cycling shoes but this is his first pair of road shoes. Is this normal? He said that size 10 felt a half a size big in Trivent and a half a size small in the road version. Maybe the many miles he has logged on his Trivent shoes have widened the shoe. Design wise is also impossible to tighten a Trivent like you can the road version

His feet are not too wide but maybe a little bit wider than normal. I do not know, maybe he is just not used to road shoes and has been riding on tri shoes since he began cycling. Something else is that I will have to move the strap to make it longer as right now only a short piece is going into the ratchet buckle.

No problem if I have to sell them. No LBS carries has this type of road shoe in stock in this area of Mexico. Those shoes will be gone from the LBS very quickly. He sold Sergio's first Cervélo in half a day.

Has anyone else found this difference on the road version of the Trivents?

Best wishes,

Sergio

I wear the same size in both shoes. I also wear socks with both shoes. The roads definitely do not feel any tighter to me - they feel very similar.

Dave, his old Trivents do look and feel wider but that may be because they have been used for many miles. I loose nothing getting him a half a size or even a size bigger as he is still growing fast. There is only a very little space in front of the toe. Maybe it is just that the shoes are not broken in but I am pretty sure that a 43 1/2 or 44 will be a better choice.

I will check this out in detail today and see what to do.

Best wishes,

Sergio
