Prize Money For Pros and Age Group Athletes at Niagara Falls Barrelman
Quote | Reply
Given the recent discussions regarding North American races and prize money, I wanted to let people know the Niagara Falls Barrelman will once again have prize money. We offer an OPEN PRIZE PURSE of $5000 with the prize money awarded to the top 5 male and top 5 female finishers, whether Pro or Age Group. The money will be allocated as follows:
1st - $1,000
2nd- $750
3rd - $500
4th - $150
5th - $100

Last week I was talking with a U.S. pro who will be racing with us this year and he asked if Lionel Sanders will be defending his Barrelman title. All I could tell him was, the last time I spoke with Lionel, he said that Barrelman was on his radar but it would depend on where he was in his final preparation for Kona. There is a chance he will not be racing Barrelman and, although the MSC team would love to have Lionel back in 2015, this could be good news for the competition!

The U.S. dollar is still about 20% than the Canadian, effectively a 20% discount. There are other updates to the run course and more in our latest newsletter: http://conta.cc/1PSMyKK

We have also just realized, as far as we can tell, Barrelman was the second largest independent non 70.3 half in North America!

I'm maybe a bit out of the loop, but if an AG'er takes the cash, do they become pro for future races? I know this is all a bit grey in the triathlon world...

If it is a USAT-Sanctioned event with $5000 or more in prize money, then only athletes with an Elite Card (Pro) can win money.
If less than $5000, an Age Group card holder can win cash and it does not automatically make them an a Elite card holder (Pro)

Except it's in Canada, so the USAT elite prize purse rules don't apply

How many are you expecting? I'm curious what the numbers look like in that category, honestly have no idea.

We had 710 total register in 2014 and are tracking close to the same time last year. I am not sure what category you are asking about. The prize money is for top 5 male and top 5 female overall. It doesn't matter what category. Hopefully that answrers your question.

I think last year there were probably about 10 guys in the elite age group/pro mens field, but the money is open to anyone no matter which wave they start in. It is a great race for anyone in the Northeast USA as travel is fairly easy. Last year both Lionel Sanders and Cody Beals raced, but I'm not sure either will be there this year opening up the money a bit more. I'm looking forward to going back for some redemption, and the new start looks fantastic.

No, won't be able to make it this year. Heading to Kona a good three weeks in advance to acclimatize to the heat. It's a great race though. Water is pretty protected so not much risk of chop. Bike is flat and fast. Run is deceptively challenging. Wish I could make it. Will definitely do it again in the future.

John,
Can you send me a email? jordanbryden@gmail.com . I am the race director for the Chinook Triathlon, and have the same opinion as you. I am also offering prize money to the pro field as i really don't want to see the sport suffer due to the latest changes. I think it is doing some much harm to something we care about.

I'd love to do this race again, it was definitely my favorite last year. It doesn't really fit my schedule for 2015 but I'm pretty sure I'll be back in 2016.

Quoted for truth, exact same for me.

I have a longer race in late August, and still hold out hope that I'll be recovered enough to participate (even if it isn't racing) for Barrelman this year.

Raced last year, and it was an awesome event. The bike was flat, but windy. The run was challenging for sure.

If you're on the fence about it, just do it. It's the most scenic run in all of Tri (that isn't on an island in the middle of the Pacific).

John this is a great idea.

I would encourage up and comers who are on the fence "do I go pro" to check this out. Same as Chinook Triathlon. It will give you a real taste of how it feels to be at the pointy end of a race with a few bucks on the line. A good introduction to growning into becoming a pro.

I'm F you're a hack like me, for the race start alone Barrelman is world class. Check out the swim! Wow!

Good luck John. Being in BC I can't make it-:(

When one door closes, one opens. I really think independent races can make a lot of hay for 5000 right now. Lots of good local, regional, and national, regional and local pro/elites out there that want to race and not do WTC. Great to see races doing this.

I would love to see some more independent races that are 70.3 and 140.6 put up some prize money. I think its a good investment, in the race and the sport. I see tons of local running and cycling events with smaller prize money and it turns a race into an EVENT.

As a pro since 2004, I personally thank all the race directors that support elite racing and try to support those races, not just because its good business, but because it reminds me of the spirit of the sport I feel in love with in 1997.

We are pleased that a number of U.S. based pros have decided to come to Barrelman this year and a few others have emailed to say they are still considering racing Barrelman. A couple have also asked if Lionel Sanders is coming back to defend his title. Unfortunately Lionel is leaving for Kona the day before Barrelman for his last block of prep...of course that might have opened the top spot prize money for one of the pros or age group athletes.

A bit too far for me to come from BC but I love the fact that you (and Jordan with Chinook) are doing this and offering prize money to whoever shows up and places! Best of luck with the race

SavageMan's got $5000 in guaranteed money (overall + stage primes) and another $5000 available for overall course or swim/bike/run/Big Savage Ascent leg records. It's been that way forever and continues today. Not to mention comped entry and other benefits for elite card holders.
