As we are all aware, prize money is tight in our line of work. WTC has been traditionally rough with pros. Rev3 dropped their purse last year only to be bought by Challenge. Challenge made big promises early only to go back on their word and reduce it big time. Lifetime Fitness has withdrawn their money, and I'm sure you can think of many others who have done so too. The pointy end of our sport is contracting, and it's time we do something about it.
I, for one, have decided to reach into my own pockets and offer a modest sum of $700 in prize money at the French Creek Triathlon (https://www.athletepath.com/...triathlon/2015-05-17) this season. The money race is the Olympic distance tri which will be held at beautiful French Creek State Park in Elverson, PA at 7AM on Sunday 5/17. I know this is a bit long distance for those of you on the west coast, but if you're in the northeast, I'd ask you to consider coming out to our event. If you're signed up for Knoxville, show Challenge your disapproval by attending a competing event. With your support, we can grow this into a bigger event in years to come, and I can always guarantee that what money I promise, I will deliver, in cash, on the spot, at the awards ceremony.
Officially, registration closes at 4PM on Thursday, so I'd ask that you contact me by then if you'd like to race. If you miss the deadline, try me anyway. I'm a pro triathlete myself, so I will do my best to roll out the "red carpet" for you.
Also, I've added this Prize Money Calendar (http://ustriathlete.org/prizemoneyraces/) for your enjoyment. Please take a look and add to it if you know of a local race that didn't make the list.
In the long term, big race management companies look at pros as an unnecessary part of the race experience. We are a liability, not an asset. I will not tolerate this way of thinking and I'm in the process of changing that viewpoint.
