I run/ride Stuart Mesa a few times a week. Watch yourselves on Stuart Mesa going through the southern end of Las Flores, the road construction zone is pretty gnarly. I can see water bottles being launched like artillary there.

Speaking of artillery, just read in the paper that they're doing live fire drills on the base next weekend. Hopefully far far away from where we'll be riding.

They do those drills all the time. I live in San Clemente and we hear them weekly year round. Just wear a flak jacket on the bike and you'll be fine :)

Weather update 4:30am Sunday morning:

"The 12z GFS shows heights falling as a deeper trough develops across the Great Basin next weekend. This may bring stronger winds and cooling...but looks dry for socal at this time."

From my FB page

Good morning. Up for at 5am for a drive down to Oceanside Ca to Pre ride next weekends Ironman 70.3 (half Ironman) bike course with friends. I know it's SoCal but a solid storm coming today. Just watched the weather, wind, rain, cold, hail, and maybe thunder storms later this morning....should be fun:)

All part of the ambiance dude. What other race can boast live-fre artillary?

Its a HUGE base, no worries.

My bike was picked up by TriBike Transport on Saturday. Catching a plane on Wed. Getting pumped for my first race of the season.

We road the coast part of the course yesterday.... just beat the rain but a stiff head wind going back south. I agree that section with the construction is gnarly.

I see it as an advantage to slow people like me. It slows everyone down so I can catch up.

I hear they're going to be shooting over your head on the bike course. Ride faster.

Basilone will also be disgusting, they have been doing construction on that stretch of road all year now. Metal plates, road cut up in sections, uneven pavement. Good luck if it rains.

After racing Magic Mountain Man 3 times, which has one of the worst stretch of roads I've EVER encountered on a tri bike, nothing can faze me! :)

5 days to go. Here's today's outlook:

"Onshore winds look to strengthen Saturday through early Sunday as an upper trough moves by to the north. Winds may become somewhat strong and gusty over the mountain and desert areas during that time...but the trough is not expected to dig far enough south to bring US precipitation. This could change given future model runs."

So, right now, it looks like the standard morning overcast with some afternoon sun and temps likely in the upper 60s on race day. Water temps still around 56 this morning.

Nice

And thanks all for the road construction updates. Glad I got rid of the behind the seat stuff. If history holds, I'll be riding Basilone so slowly that sliding over the metal plates might speed me up a bit

I'm with ya Chris. I'm so undertrained on the bike- just did a 45-miler on Saturday and was smashed afterward!

I'm glad I'm not the only one undertrained for this.
Here is a stupid question, has anyone ever not made the cutoff times.

I worked the swim exit last year and I think there were 3-4 that didn't make the swim cutoff. Don't know about the rest of the cutoffs.
Anyone heard any more about the mid-run cutoff??

Ah, when race hits you'll forget all about being under trained and do fine.

Till about mile 28.5 when you stare up what looks like a mountain.

Crappers. 35-39 here.

And it is true we get to ride down, part is a seed limit and the rest is into a headwind.
