Nutrition Question
I just completed IM AZ but barely. My last two Ironman races (IMWI & IM AZ) have been very hot and I have suffered having my stomach shut down during the bike. I have trained in the heat but seem to struggle with the nutrition. I passed out under the 101 bridge twice on the 3rd loop. Some how I talked the paramedics into letting me continue. I made it but it wasn't pretty.

My first 3 IM races went smooth with very little calories on the bike 200 per hour tops. The problem there is I run out of gas during the run. On the flip side it seems that over 300 shuts my stomach down.

It may be the heat as well. Just really frustrated now. I'm capable of a sub 11 Ironman based on my past results but have returned a 15:45 and now a 16 hour my last 2 outings.

Has anyone out there overcome similar problems?

Does anyone know of a good endurance sports nutritionist?

I'm tired of Ironman survival and would hate to give this all up.

Thanks

Sodium is not the answer for everybody (though it helps many people)

One thing athletes have to be honest about are their efforts/pacing during the swim & bike ... it's a common theme that people's stomachs "shut down" on the bike even though they were using the same product as training. I'm finding this common theme associated w/ athletes swimming/riding a little harder than what may be ideal for pacing and nutritional absorption. An ugly combination is swimming/riding harder then what might be optimal as two things can happen here ... caloric needs go up because of increased effort AND calories are possibly not being absorbed as readily because the effort is greater than what has been trained. Need up + absorption down = DEADLY

The other thing may be racing in the heat when not completely trained for it ... in this case pace/effort must be adjusted down to deal accordingly, producing less stress and allowing the body to absorb more fluids.

The fact may be you need more than 200cals per hour but maybe 300cal at the pace you are riding does not absorb. Try exclusively fluid calories (you may already be there) and/or slow down slightly.

Hope that helps give some more light and best wishes sorting through this.

BTW ... in my early days i had this problem .. sorted it with simple nutrition & smart pacing

As mentioned, there could be a multitude of challenges here: heat, not practicing what I call "race simulation eating", hydration/electrolyte imbalances, ingredients in foods/beverages that you consume, carbohydrate concentration in foods/beverages, etc.

This is my specialty area and have assisted many IMers in the past overcome similar issues to yours. I'd be happy to discuss it with you more. Drop me a line...seebohar@aol.com
