Moving to Singapore
Hi

I'll be relocating to Singapore in 3 weeks, can somebody give me some advice on the best cycling routes, potential group rides I can join, good bike shops, tri or cycling clubs?

I'll be living in what seems to be a pretty centric place (Robertson Quay)

Appreciate any feedback and advice

Cheers

Hello!

Have heard good things about group rides at ANZA: http://www.anza.org.sg/...112353&id=271433

Also for indoor training: Athlete's Lab: http://singapore.athlete-lab.com/

Make sure you bring your bike with you. The cycling shops seem extremely expensive.

Robertson Quay is a good place to live. You can do runs by the river and add some hills up Fort Canning Park. Also connects to nice parks by Marina Barrage.

Let me know if you need any more info about general life in Singapore...

Singapore is a tough place to ride a bike because of the heat. There are two main loops, one is the Kranji loop and the other is RTI (round the island). Most of the riding groups would do a variant of the two. Most would meet at Macritchie (spelled wrongly) reservoir or close by as the set off point.
ANZA is very popular and they have different levels for all cyclists.
The big triathlon group in Singapore is Metasports who owns the Bintan 70.3 and several other events. They are great especially if you want to make friends? Athlete's Lab is great if you work around the CBD, ask for Bastian and he will set you up....
Bintan (60 mins away on a ferry) is a good weekend spot to ride your bike. Some go across the causeway to Malaysia as well. Then there is Thanyapura or Phuket which is growing in popularity in terms of Tri training!

Hope this helps

Most routes tackle the outer perimeter of the island because you'll hit quite a bit of traffic lights otherwise. Besides riding in the morning, night rides are very popular because the street lighting is great and the weather will be cooler too (Late night supper spots are not hard to find as well). Triathletes will be delighted with the very flat terrain overall too. East Coast Park is a great place to run, as well as the previously mentioned Marina Bay gardens (both which are linked by park connector paths. I personally ride with a group that starts from Toa Payoh (central singapore); ANZA is very popular with expats.

If you have any specific questions, I'll be happy to answer your queries via PM, cheers.

One good thing about Singapore traffic is that it starts later than what we see in the US. Traffic is not really bad until about 6:45 or even 7. Roads are clean and lighting is good. Only downside is morning rain, which is not that common most of the year. Forget riding in most places during the day - it is not safe. One safe place is starting behind Marina Bay Sands and going across the barrage to the east coast. There are a few other reasonably safe areas but none close to Robertson Quay.
