Merrell Trail Glove 3
These have long been my favorite shoes. Merrell just did a redesign with the Trail Glove 3 (TG3). I got in a pair yesterday. The fit is basically the same as the Trail Glove 2 (TG2). They feel very familiar. They changed the tread pattern. They have more substantial grip than the TG2. TG3 also has a bit thicker soles, with more rock protection. They are still very flexible though. For trail running on steep, rocky terrain, this is a good update. I would have loved having these when I was running in Mission Trails Park in San Diego regularly. Overall I think that the update is a good one. Also, they are available in black, which is the only reasonable choice really.... ; ).

Reads like an add.

I wanted to like the merrell's but they just didn't work with my normal shaped foot.

Well I suppose but I am not selling anything. I have a wide foot, especially in the toe box, which is why I like Merrell.

Thanks for the write up. TG2 is my favourite "all round shoe" - time for a new pair!

I could not get them locally so I did the usual internet search to see what was out there on them. Nothing. Too new I suppose. I called Merrell to discuss fit and decided to pull the trigger. Just sharing what I found out so others would have more info than I did.

I use them in the gym, for running, walking around, trail running, whatever. I wore my TG2 until I wore multiple holes in both of them.

If you like a wide toe box, give Altra a try.

I bought one pair of Merrell for my wide feet (although it was the Bare Access). They are comfy but I can't stand the heel collar (too low for my taste). I really wanted to like the Bare Access though... Altra is the way to go for me.

I've got a wide, perfectly flat foot and I really like my merrells.(bare access 3, bare access trail and mix masters) Now I just have to watch for clearance sales and closeouts.

Well, I hate to change what is working. I may give them a look though.

Might give the Superior a look if Merrell has been working for you. The Instinct might be close to the beefier Bare Access models. I'd been using the Trail Glove for a while, got a pair of the first gen Instincts, and did a 10-miler the first day (my long run at the time). Very comfy. Superior is more trail-oriented. I think they're discontinuing the Samson (very minimalist), so you might be able to find them on close-out.

Another option for a wide foot that I have had luck with Pearl Izumi's (currently use N2's, Trail N1's, N0's) since the uppers are flexible. I have a really wide forefoot and a narrower heel. I dislike any NB wides since they just feel like a fat shoe (fat feel/fat midfoot /pointed toebox)

Although Altra's do work for my foot shape, I don't like the zero drop, they start to irritate my achilles.

Since Mike is already in a zero drop shoe (the Trail Glove), it likely won't be an issue transitioning to Altras. NB's have models with zero, 4mm, and up of drop. I'm surprised you found the wide NB's to be sloppy. I went with wides on the Minimus Road (first gen, I believe) and found the added width to be just about in the perfect place -- the outside toe box area. The heel and midfoot felt just as snug (to me) as the standard width. Might be worth a look, anyway.

I am in Pensacola, FL now so finding shoes like that is really difficult. I'll have to stick with the Trail Gloves for now. No problem though because I wear them until the bottoms have multiple holes. Should be good for another 549 days, when I retire and head back to the West coast.
