MY NEW HOOKER ELITE CAT1
USPS just delivered my new Hooker Elite CAT1 just now.
This thing is a beauty!!!!!
Superb condition complete with frame, fork, both Hooker SL brakes (front & rear), seatpost & to top it off the original Hooker TT bars with all original nuts / bolts / hardware.
Was thinking of using it for a few Oly Tri's later this year but this is too nice to race.

Could'nt help it but I had to put my Zipp1080 & 900 on it to see how it looked..........
Any suggestions as to build - thinking of either full 90's retro build or the current TT / Tri build up..............................

a collector put it on ebay believe it or not, that was 2 weeks ago.
these come up for sale now & then, but never in this superb 'museum condition' and it came with all the original pieces and hardware......
photos do not do this thing justice, its gorgeous, the paint looks like it was done last week!

That is SO cool. I almost bought Andy Coggan's Cat 1 a few years ago, but it wasn't in anywhere near the same condition. I stupidly passed on it because I thought that USAC would be operating TTs under UCI rules by now. Big mistake for me...

I've been looking for one of these for a looooooong time, finally got one in perfect nick!
The hooker tt bars are probably more rare than the frame & fork!

BTW - there are 2 Hookers on ebay right now.
one is a pursuit version (track) and the other is a CAT1.
The CAT1 looks not be getting too much interest (cheap), it has been re-painted but have both Hooker SL front & rear brakes.

yes, it is a great piece of american cycling history.
chock full of innovations for its time with a cult following here on ST.
the hooker sl brakes that were included are like small pieces of 'aluminum jewelery' - there is not one mark on the brakes - even the rear BB mounted one.

I'm leaning towards a retro 90's aero build.
not sure of the components that might do this f&f justice.....suggestions?
was there an aero / TT crank available back then?

Don't know about that, but for front wheel I'd suggest trying to find a Specialized version of the trispoke. For the rear, any flat disc of the time period will do.

Nice bike but you missed a great opportunity for an awesome thread title. Add 3 too many words.

This crank was pretty aero and is roughly from the same time, I think the crank was a bit newer but still square taper.

I'd put the new wheelset on and see how fast you can make that baby fly.

HED H3/ Specialized tri-spoke would be of the era and would look great & fast.

Dude I would NOT race that in a big triathlon. Maybe a small local one where you can have a friend/family member watch it like a hawk in transition. People are so brazen today I would not be shocked to hear that it was stolen if you took it to a biggun.

Also, my large pants just suddenly shrunk to small. That bike is full on pjorn.

How did you get any geo for that? Guesstimate and took a chance? Ever time I do an ebay search I look for them and never saw this one. Kudos dude....

Maybe dress it up like the baddest man to ever rock a Hooker in an ITT?

If anyone is interested, my father-in-law has one of these sitting in his garage. I believe it's a 56.

Oh cool. The OP MUST find a FiR Killing System rear disc. How could you not?
I've got a right-side-only Dura-Ace 8 or 9 speed compatible Grip Shifter (only 8 clicks but it indexes both) if you'd like it.
Maybe a 1 x 8 set up?

Too funny, I have a set of 8sp DA Grip Shifts as well...they currently "live" on my old Bianchi road bike :-)

On the hoods? or like bar-end shifters, on the hooks?

On the hooks, like bar ends. Poor man's STI ;-)

I tried to put them there on a road bike, but they shifted the ´wrong way round´ compared to how I was used to on the extensions, so I gave up. Pity, it was a neat solution and agreeably retro.

Post a pic of your Bianchi - we need some retro steel to balance out the carbon stuff....

Its not that bad around my local races.
usually with the Subaru Series Tri's & Milk Series Tri's there are lots of security in around T1.

I looked for a loooong time for this hooker, searches on ebay, kijiji, craigslist, ST, Tri Classifieds.....etc.
Persistence was the key in finding this hooker, and a bit of luck to get this particular one from a 'collector'.
thats the main reason it is in superb cond. - it was probably never ridden outside!!!

Oh, thanks for the input on the build suggestion......

like the Fir disc suggestion....anyone got the specs for that one?
googled it, only found images of the disc.

don't know about grip shifters though, kinda goofy........
I did see a retro Mavic Mektronic wireless system on ebay - complete with brake levers, cpu, rear derailleur & sensor.
same vintage as the hooker too.
anyone with any experience with this?

I raced on Mektronic for a year and a half. When it functioned, the system was very good. It had amazing ergonomics. They couldn't seem to make them work reliably so it was pulled from shelves.

Nice find! The frame is pretty awesome. The Zipps are a nice touch, but I like the tri-spoke recommendation from some of the other posters. These frames pop up every-now-and-then, so kudos to your vigilant eyes!

One of our customers found one on Craigslist and sent it to us a few months ago. He couldn't believe he found one. We were stoked to repair, restore, and paint the frame!
