Kona- Jombo Visma

What do these have in common? There are three grand tours in Europe, Giro Italia, Tour France and the Volta. This is bike racing a team sport where no individual can win without team support. Jombo Visma came close to imploding and wrecking team chemistry by there 2 team leaders Roglic who won the Giro and Vingegaard the winner of the Tour of France attack the race leader on stage 17 who is on their team. Sep Kuss who became leader on September 2 has held the red jersey till now. Vingegaard closed to within 8 seconds on stage 17. Seep helped the other 2 to win their races because that is his job a super domestic he happened to win a stage and take over as the race leader at the Volta . Everyone watching including the media said this is unacceptable you are destroying your team. Stage 18 things changed and they now are supporting the race leader ending a terrible mistake. Ironman is imploding and the the wreckage is everywhere. How can you take something so wonderful and destroy it. The Ironman World Championship has been in Kona 45 years men and women racing together from the beginning. Last years race was done very well and the magic was back even with 5000 racing there. The 2 race format is a fake championship for the age groupers because many did qualify to be there. Women’s championship in Kona next month same thing they flooded the age groups with non qualifiers to bring the numbers up. You would of thought they would have learned from St George another fake age group championship. Look around and see what is happening only 1000 at Wisconsin at the full. Only 1000 at Chattanooga coming up. Yes some of it is because of expense but for a lot of us it is because of what Ironman is doing. I know women who will turn down there qualifying slot if they get it because it is in Nice 2024. I know men who are not going to race any Ironmans in 2024 because that would put them in Nice. Jumbo Visma figured out what was right and fixed it. Ironman is destroying its self…..and it breaks my heart.

I had to ask chat gpt to both read and explain what you were saying…

“The poster is drawing a parallel between two prominent sports situations:

Jumbo Visma's internal team conflict: This cycling team faced criticism for internal competition, as two team leaders challenged their own teammate who held the race lead. Despite this error, the team later mended its strategy and began supporting its race leader.

Ironman's organizational decisions: The Ironman organization, particularly regarding the World Championship in Kona, is facing backlash for its recent choices. By allowing non-qualifiers to compete, many perceive the integrity and prestige of the event to be diluted. As a result, participation in some Ironman events is dropping, and some athletes are voicing their discontent.

The connection or analogy here is about understanding the essence and integrity of a competition or team. Just as Jumbo Visma had to rectify its approach to preserve team harmony and the spirit of competition, the poster is suggesting that the Ironman organization needs to reconsider its recent decisions to maintain the respect and authenticity of its events. In both cases, the core values and integrity of the sport or event are being tested by internal or organizational challenges.”

Y'all should read what Kuss said about the stage where all this noise came from. He said it was agreed that all would race and let their fitness determine the result. Only after did they agree that attacking each other would not do anything since JV had the podium locked up.

Comparing this to WTC adapting the WC to the ever changing and more costly world is just noise as well.

Having just raced in Nice I would do it all over again in a heartbeat, I don't care much and have limited interest in Kona, costs more, more difficult to get to, the locals dont want us racing there, it's hot it is a legacy appeal with some incredible history and past races.... But not an actually great course. Nice wc will have an amazing history too just how the races unfold. That bike course is just epic. And it stops penalising the parts of the world for whom kona is super far away.

We know Kona 2 days is impossible so 1 day unless IM were to schedule the pro women to start 1 hour before the men and restrict the entry numbers both genders it isn't going to happen... I don't blame them for wanting to increase the chances for ppl who for whatever reason are obsessed with going to Kona.

Times change. I had a Nokia phone, a blackberry, many records and I used to own many fantastic 90s era snowboards. Times move on plenty of other amazing races, IM gets many things wrong but this whole Kona thing is a bit out of their hands, venue is too small too expensive and 1 day isn't enough, we cant fix that.

Insiders are telling me that Jumbo is heavily lobbying for the creation of a new jersey for the team doctors at the grand tours. The discussion is now centered on whether it should have syringes instead of polka dots, or rather tablets.

Personally it makes a lot of sense, because it's the most important member of the team.

You’re drawing conclusions way too early. Maybe the bike mechanic and his friends the battery and engine specialists are the most important men in the team.
