Kansas 70.3?
2 questions:

-Is the bike course ridable prior to the event?
-Is the swim typically wetsuit legal?

Thanks

Awesome bike course that is very rideable before the event. Great road surface with minimal traffic.

1) Yes -- The few weekends leading up to the event you might see more triathletes riding the route than cars

2) It is borderline. 2 years ago no wetsuit. Last year, wetsuit legal. Was a cold winter and cool spring so far. But a hot May could change things by race time.

Good to know. I am from St. Louis, but am in the area on business on the regular and may try and sneak in a week day ride.

I live 3-1/2 hours away... but as slowly as things are warming up in the midwest so far, it would take a couple of screaming hot weeks in May with very little rain to make it non-wetsuit. Right now the long terms models show mostly average temperatures and more important, low evening temps meaning humidity will stay mild. Low humidity means higher evaporation which will keep the lake temps depressed as well. IN terms pf race conditions, it could be a very fast year with moderate temps and humidity.

Keep in mind that 2 years ago was one of the warmest winters on record. This winter was one of the coldest. Last spring was very rainy... until it stopped in June ... and pretty much didn't rain again until late August.

Roads look really smooth from the pictures. Overall the event looks a lot like Pigman (the only other 70.3 I've done), with the overall venue and terrain. Except there will be about 1500 people instead of 300 racing it.

Why do a lot of people say the swim is usually hard. Is it a windy lake?

Can be. Two years ago there were 2-3 foot waves from the 30mph winds and safety boat wakes. Very rough swim -- and I am a swimmer. Last year wasn't so bad because the storms blew through early morning and by race time it was relatively calm. Wind picked up again later in the morning and affected the bike a bit.

It is a GREAT comparison with Pigman, which is a great race and VERY reasonably priced.

Is Kansas a little hillier? Or about the same? Since it's June, not August, I assume there's usually a more wind. Pigman was pretty calm last year and unusually cool too.

I'm pretty excited to see what I can do. My training load on the bike is 3X what it was last year and about 50% more running and swimming volume.

What are the odds the bike course will be marked, or is it already, by next weekend? Planning on heading up and riding for Memorial Day.

There is a course map on IM website. I wrote it out and taped on my top tube and rode it. Definitely worth riding prior if possible. There is only one real flat section for about 8 miles staring somewhere around mile 44. The rest is rollers with a few hills. Be prepared for wind, the day I rode the wind was horrendous and the ride was not fun. There were legitimate waves on the lake.
