Lucky for you I am a bit of a photo geek and am happy to share. :)

I took that shot at the swim finish using a Nikon D4s and a 300mm f/2.8 VR II. The shallow depth of field (ie blurry background) is caused by shooting at f/2.8 and the fact that those guys were many feet behind. The bigger the separation, the more the blur. In terms of lighting, the swim finish and chute were in the shadows, so as Javi passed into the shadows, he and the rest of the foreground were underexposed relative to section behind with those guys trailing. To make the image usable, I dodged the foreground to lighten it up. Pretty standard post production stuff. The 300mm f/2.8 is one of the sharpest prime teles around, so no other treatment needed. Instagram may have done something when I posted it, but I didn't apply any special filters.
His cap is missing because someone pulled it off during the race....
