I braved the freezing weather and went to the pool this morning.

I'm not going for any huge totals, but my per practice yards have been inching up steadily since I started Masters in November. Highlight of the week, there's a new swimmer in my lane and I am no longer the slowest one in the pool!

we did 100x100 LCM...

Pace times were pretty slack 1.35, 1.40, 1.45

It was part of a Cancer fundraiser, one of our local masters swimmers passed from pancreatic cancer recently. Jeanne swam 18.3x at 54 in the 1500 SCM.

So I am not quite sure how my mind expanded to wish for a 115x100.. But on New Years we did 115 x 50m. Still a great time, and fun was had by all. We took turns, there were three in our lane, coming up with fun "10x50" sets. Some notable...

5x100 free decending (mine, of course... One set on 1:40, and another one on 1:30)
5 x "FRIM", 50 free, 50 stroke IM order. 100im at end....
100 fl, 100 bk, 100 br, 100 fr, 100 IM (= butt kicker)

Not much kicking, but some pulling thrown in.

Good times. 5750scm. Went swimming with my daughter (who is now two sessions into starting swim team) in the afternoon to log a 7000scm day. Great start to the year!

10,000 yards straight.

Just wanted to see if i could do it. Way too boring - wont be doing that again. Since it was not meters I know it is not considered a true 10k but it dont matter to me. Hopefully I didnt lose my sprint speed (100yd) by doing it.

No crazy NYD swim for me either. Just trying to get back to where I was... close now:

500s/100k 6:25
400s/100k 5:05
300s/100k 3:42
200s/100k 2:27
100s/100k 1:09
100s/100k 1:08
200s/100k 2:24
300s/100k 3:47
400s/100k 5:08
500s/100k 6:30
5x100 s/k cool

4500 sc yardages
The last 400/500 were pretty tough, really fought hard to keep good mechanics. Points to I still have a bit to go as this used to be no problem holding a faster pace.

10k straight in pool... that's brutal!

I pushed it pretty good yesterday, so today was all for style points - concentrate more on technique and/or try new things. Nothing pushed too terribly hard.

Neat. Pat yourself on the back. ;-)

After a 7k first day of the year, a day of skiing, and then traveling home, i found myself already behind on FLOG. :-) So I forced my little girl (9) to the pool on a Sunday for some 25m drills!... that plus a good sprint workout today and all is right in the FLOGging world - I am ahead by one mile.

You've all missed this fact.. but my daughter has finally succumbed to my 'water torture' incessant bugging and she has joined the swim team (she's doing really well), and my wife has planned to partake in a sprint triathlon next September. So, i have managed to coerce two new fish to the world in the past 3 months!!! Well, one new fish. My wife on the other hand has struggled in feeling comfortable in the water. And with breathing. It is amazing to me how different the experience of swimming can be for different folks... She has been reviewing the Total Immersion stuff (videos and books), and had a lesson or two... but it has been a challenge to keep it all positive and help her realize how she is progressing.

Anyway... musings over.

Welcome to the New Year Fish! (It was fun swimming virtually with you last year.) This year I am planning a Victoria 70.3... the National Championship 2 mile swim at Foster Lake, and an the Olympic Pacific Crest Tri the next day.

And, of course, welcome to all of the "New Year Resolution" Fish. :-)

It's so hard to fathom (pun?) what stress adult onset swimmers are going through. I see this guy get through 25 yards in about a minute. He's maybe 40 and he looks reasonably fit, but this is killing him, he's completely out of breath. He can't understand how I get through multiple laps in reasonable comfort.

And JasoninHalifax, I know that feeling. Years ago, I did a 10k/40k/5k duathlon and hammered the bike to catch this girl and pass her, which I did. In the 5k, she strolled right on past me. She won the women's overall and when she was called to receive her reward, she went up the holding her newborn.

Back to work today means back to my early short workouts - sucks!

I think it's hard to explain to childhood onset swimmers how weird and scary being in the water is. The biggest lightbulb moment for me in my five years of swimming (learned front crawl at 30 after a lifetime of water fear, yay childhood near drowning!) is that the arms and legs don't keep you from sinking, body position keeps you up. When I started to think of swimming as floating with propulsion it became ten times easier.

That is an interesting insight - it makes a lot of struggling AO swimmers approach make sense. Embrace the float.

I just got back in the water yesterday with 3km (6 x 500: 4 free/2 kick) after 10 days out with an ear infection - nice to be back.

Also, by way of New Year plans etc: am seriously considering Waikiki Roughwater/Maui Channel (relay) swims: anyone else got these in their calendar? Apologies if this is a (mild) thread hijack.

There is no such thing as a thread hijack in the monthly Fish thread if the topic concerns swimming. :-)

When is Waikiki? How does the swim usually work? Size of teams? Length of each leg?

Edit: 2015 Maui Channel Swim will be SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 6, 2015 to accomodate 2015Waikiki Roughwater Swim to be held Saturday September 5, 2015

Sorry - my poor typing gave the impression both are relays: The Waikiki swim is 3.8km solo - the original Ironman swim. The Maui channel is 15km or so (currents/conditions depending) in teams of 6. Everyone swims 30 mins turns and then you can mix it as you please. You need a boat & skipper etc- I'm currently investigating getting onto a team who has done it before and has this stuff organised. No solo swimmers allowed anymore.

Was planning on swimming this morning but it didn't happen, as my legs are pretty tired from a hard 2hr ride Sunday w/VO2 intervals. So, today will be just a weightlifting day.

I have a general question for anyone here who has experience. I'm having my wisdom teeth (4 of them) taken out on the 16th of January (I was given a choice between now and summer, and summer I have my goal ITU race and I just love to train in the summer anyways--days off for wisdom teeth wouldn't fly).

Does anyone here remember how long they had to wait after having the wisdom teeth out to resume swimming?? I'm thinking one week should suffice (and I'll probably bike anytime I can during that week and do stretch cords), but I'm wondering what everyone else here's experience has been.

Not the way I wanted to kick off 2014, but better now than later I suppose. :/

Well, I know I ran the day after I had mine out. I think I swam two days after. I got dry sockets, which were intensely painful. I had a thread about having them out, so you might try a search - I recall jonnyo replying that he trained almost immediately post surgery (as in had the surgery and got on his bike that afternoon or something).

So I would caution you not to get in the water for several days after having them out, unless you want to get in and just kick, which I did for several days.
