Inexpensive Cyclocross Singlespeed
Bianchi has a new cx singlespeed for under $600.

Can I beat that price assembling a bike from an e-bayed frame, parts, etc, or is that a pretty good savings?

I want to be able to run fenders and 35mm tires for commuting and winter riding is my real goal.

Check out the Planet X Uncle John and the On-One Pompino. You can find them at www.zedsport.com. I can attest the Uncle John being a great bike as I have one (not set up as single speed though). Great prices too.

I believe the point was cheaper than the bianchi - @ 395 for the frame only uncle john, doubt you could build it into a bike for under $579 (bianchi)...

Buy a used Surly Cross Check. Without trying too hard, you could build something up for about $400 off ebay (and you could probably find most of the parts for next to nothing at your LBS's spare parts bin).
