Isn't there a trial going on right now for an incident where people attacked indiscriminately against an athletic event in Boston? Not only is it likely, but surprising it isn't happening all the time.

I don't know if it's just me or not, but I certainly feel pretty invincible when I'm intoxicated. I think it's safe to say I've done dumber shit to harm myself (or potentially) than that.

Damn, I knew someone would Trump my Ace. I forgot the drunk/stupid excuse. That covers just about any situation. You win :-)

It looks quite unfortunate, and if intentional...a very shitty thing to do. But trying to put it on par with Boston is quite a stretch.

Think about every cycling race and tri race you can. How many spectators are taking down riders? Very very very few. How many chances are there to do so? Very very very many.

So, I would say it isn't likely and it isn't surprising that it isn't happening all the time.

That didn't look intentional at all to me. If you look at the slomo, he's clearly banging the fence, and unfortunately chooses a really bad time to do it. He's banging the second before, and he's banging the second after.

Not to say that wasn't a horrendous outcome, but also in his defense, rewind the video and everyone else was banging the fence at the sprint as well.

Nah I'll admit it could have been a stupid drunken mistake not just intentional one. After several revisits it seems odd that when you see him "clapping" on the barrier his movement is short and rapid and then as the cyclist is passing all of a sudden it shoots out.

That being said that still could have just been a poorly timed mistake.

Different angle, looks completely intentional from this angle

Yeah, intentional. He had to incline his upper body to reach out that far.

Dont see him banging before or after in that second shot. I'd think its a local nutter.

I watched it about 5 times, and I can't see how this was intentional. If you look at the dude in the seconds before the accident, he's banging on the wall. The rider comes by him just as he lifted his hand back to bang, catching his arm with the brake and pulling it back. It's one of the sucky consequences of putting riders and spectators so close.

With bike handling skills like that, she must be a triathlete.

Here's a very slowed-down version of the important part of the "Helden Magazine" video (grabbed off youtube, slowed down, reposted)

To me, it very much looks like he reaches _much_ farther than he was previously before impact.

I suppose there are benign explanations: He didn't see the close rider coming and wanted to cheer in a different way for one of the more distant riders. But still, a really stupid thing to do.

I think he was drunk and trying to catch a feel of the female rider as she went by and instead hit her handlebar.

How do you come to this conclusion? Seriously. How. I wouldn't even say he's banging on the wall, most like lightly tapping. His hand is not coming off more than 2in and then all of a sudden it's a foot of the wall right on top of her brakes.

i see something similar plus a little more.

watching the longest version of the video, this fan and many others are reaching over the railing and banging on the sideboards. nothing new, we see that a lot. then there is the wreck. watching that part in slow motion, he clearly reaches farther, he has his hand open, and the contact (not the motive) seems intentional. not much more after that.

it reminded me of this:
http://sports.yahoo.com/...-194928181--mlb.html
and given cycling fans' bizzare behaviour on every mountain stage, it doesn't seem too far-fetched to think he "just wanted to touch the rider" or similar nonsense.

if it was accidental where is he now? Why didn't he come forward and apologize? As that doesn't appear to have happened, either way, this guy is a bum.

Looks to me like the spectator was meaning to bang on the banner/fence to make noise as the riders finished.

I really hope that's the case.

+1. To me it's a very obvious intentional reach and grab. He's banging on the wall just fine, then leans out with full extension, palm facing the bike.
