I almost feel guilty
Reading all the articles on how to make indoor rides more tolerable; how to avoid losing fitness by shoveling snow vigorously; how to convince yourself that riding rollers is "just like riding on the road."

It was clear, bright, and snapping cold this morning as I left my southern Marin home, rolled through Sausalito, sailed over the Golden Gate Bridge with the sun rising majestically over San Francisco, clipped along Crissy Field, and down the Embarcadero to my office.

I almost feel guilty.

Almost.

Don't feel guilty...I grew up in Fairfax and lived in SF for about 7 years. I moved away because I think it's FREEZING!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Yeah, and all the smoke from you Marin-ites' fireplaces is creating a brown haze that is obscuring my Golden Gate view at this very moment ;-)

No kidding! I can smell the fireplaces this morning up here.

I looked at all the frost when I got up and said "I can't wait to live someplace warmer!!"

Hey there,
Im flying back to the area on the 17th to Jan 4th for Christmas vacation...currently in Chicago. Looking to keep up with some training...hows the ground coverage?? snowy/icy, can you still run the river valley or is it too slippery by the university? Also, are there group runs organized by the running room that still go out? Just checking into the options. Thanks!

yeah, it was a snapping 6 below (F) here this morning as rode over the high bridge on my way to the shop in White Bear Lake. No smog problems. There was a little frost. -Andy (at Hed Wheels)

actually, i'm leaving town for good on the 20th of december. something about the fact that -26 C isn't nearly as cold as it's GOING to get makes me really scared. that, and the fact that we're not at the solstice and the days run from 8:30 to 4:00. . .

anyway, there's a good dusting of snow, now - a few inches, for sure. not too icy at all, so i'd assume that the valley still looks alright in most places. sidewalks around here are fine, too, and i've seen a few hardy folks out running lately. the victoria oval's frozen, if you're a skater. the 109th street running room (i'm on whyte ave) is definintely still doing lots of runs, but i'm not sure of the times.

i'd hook you up with the u of a tri club, but they'll be on winter break during that period. let me know if i can help you out with anything, though.

-mike

p.s - for what it's worth, banff is supposed to be having their best snow season in years.

Thanks!! Are you with the U of A tri club? I was thinking on looking into the pool schedule at the butterdome and getting some swims in there (depends on the $$$)
Looking forward to running in the valley again!!

heyo -

yeah, i'm sort of with the tri club, but not training right now. i'm now sure what the u of a charges per swim, but the weekly 'rec use schedule' is here:

http://www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/campusrec/nav01.cfm?nav01=19459

for my money, i'd rather swim at kinsmen (long-course meters), since u of a is 25 yards. kinsmen's $6.50 per visit, though. coronation's a good bet - 50m and i think about $4, though not quite as central as the other two.

It was 29 degrees this morning at my house in northern Sonoma County. Sounds like you have a great commute and save the $5 toll while you pass all the gridlock. What a life!

I did the pigfarm ride this morning from Walnut Creek over Bear Creek, around San Pablo Reservoir, thru Orinda and back to WC from 5:15am to 7:30am. Temp's between 35-40 with Orinda being the coldest point.

I do this ride at least once mid week.

You may be the envy of the world, but we are the center of it (Boston, that is). Center of the Universe even.

Oh yes, I am familiar with a place known as Boston.

Big Dig, beans, tea, bitter cold, some college, and Yankees. Did I get that right ;-)

Yup, that's pretty close except you'd better be referring to the non-sporting Yankees! I am familiar with some place called Berkeley - hippies, homeless, some university, hills, FOG, an earthquake or 10.

My mother-in-law is a honest to goodness kama'aina (Porto family from Kam Heights, Honolulu) but came to the mainland (SF) for some schooling in her early 20's, met her Irish American prince and never looked back. Fifty years later, she misses the flowers, the warm rain, and fresh poi. And, she gave up surfing after one look at Ocean Beach.

Why are you leaving the Islands?

Its a great place to visit, not exactly the life for me. Better job for me, better education and opportunities for my daughter. I like city life, and its not that far from home, one little plane ride. My family is all here so I'll be back on a regular basis. I am going to miss the ocean for sure. Oh, and Hayashi's sushi, that's gonna be the tough part........kj
