IMWI 2006 Tire/Flat Survey
I saw lots of flats out there on the bike, so thought I'd conduct a very meaningless survey.

Did you get a flat on the bike course?
If yes, how many?
Tubular or Clincher?
If clincher, "standard" or "lightweight" tubes? Butyl or Latex?
What brand tires did you use front and rear?
Tire width?
PSI?

Guess that's it.

EDIT: I added tire width and PSI, too.

Good idea. I was on a motorcycle taking photos, and saw probably 4050 flats! One we stopped for was a girl with 2 tubulars that she said had leaks by the valve stem in each one. I would be very interested to know what caused so many.

No flats for me. But given the tacks-on-the-road stories of the last two years, I carried 2 tubies and 2 cartridges.

I did see one car at the side of the road with 3 big brooms strapped to the roof rack, which must have been sent out by the RD to prevent the problem from last year.

No flats.
N/A
Clincher.
Standard butyl.
Michelin Ironman front and rear, 650x23

The tires had around 50-100 pre-race miles on them. I installed new tubes a week before the race. I use simple aluminum valve extenders and plumbers tape around the valves.

When the tire is wet debri, rocks, etc, tend to "stick", they can become embedded and over a perdiod of time.....boom!!

At least that was the explanation I read here somewhere.

Thanks for the info, but I've never seen anything like that.....oftentimes 4 people within 1/2 mile. Didn't seem visually to be that much loose, and I know Rock and Paul usually make sure things are swept.

somehow avoided any flats...if I gotten any, my useless hands would have definitely caused a DNF.

Pro race 2 clincher

15 miles on them

only inflated to 100 psi

And when it rains it washes the crap from the gutters, verges etc. all over the road. I heard something about a drop or two of rain this year...

One flat,
Front Tire
Vittoria Open Corsa Evo CX Clincher
tube type dunno

dunno what the cause was but looked inside the tire for a while to find it and I couldn't. It took me about 20 minutes to change the damn thing because my hands were so cold they didn't want to work, and the tire was cold and didn't want to stay where my hands put it. Didn't have a problem later with it so I'm assuming whatever caused it fell out or never stayed with the tire to begin with.

The volunteer the held the bike must have thought I was a spaz when I was trying to change the tire but cold hands don't work well.

Interesting survey...I saw tons of flats as well. For the record, I did not flat, ran Michelin Pro Race 2 clinchers front and rear, and Conti "light" butyl tubes.

I guess I should respond to my own thread.

No flats.
Clincher tires (ran Hed3s instead of Stingers for the alu braking surface)
Standard butyl tubes.
Continental Grand Prix 4000 tires - one week old
20mm
About 120 PSI, pumped up on race morning.

I got no flats on Sunday and ran Bontrager Xlite Tubulars.

I did however get two flats on the same tires while riding the course the week before the race due to small pieces of glass. I think they did a good job of sweeping the course, but the rain brings up a lot of this kind of small stuff that pops tires.

I wondered the same thing. I saw a TON of flats and it seemed more often than not that it was on "zipps" or similiar race wheel. May have just been the group I was riding in (6 hour group).

No

Clincher

Standard Tube

Mich Pro Race - less than 100 miles on them

23mm

110 PSI Front, 114 PSI rear

Rain will often wash more debry and crap that can cause punctures onto the road. Its also harder to see glass etc when its overcast and raining.

no flats for me either (although i saw what seemed to me like a lot of people with them as well).

ran HED3 tubulars front and rear.

conti competitions 19mm front, 22mm rear.

not sure how much air pressure i had in them. i deliberately left them slightly softer than i usually do in anticipation of the wet weather.

Front flat at mile 20

Rear flat at mile 30 (had to use Tufo sealant)

Picked up my spare from my SN bag but didn't use it when my front flatted again at mile 100 (it was a slow leak - I rode it in.)

By the time I picked up my bike post-race, both tires were dead flat.

Tubulars, Vittoria Crono EVO CSs (20mm width, ~175PSI) on both. Love the tires, but next time it's wet like that I'll fill 'em with sealant PRE-race. (my bad, didn't even think about it.)

To anyone who flatted: If a 'tech support' truck drove by you without stopping, it wasn't really tech support. I was a spotter in a truck marked as 'tech support' but we were assigned to spot the pros and didn't have any tools, etc. I know a few folks looked really pissed when we sped past them and left them stranded on the roadside...

No flats for Miss P.

She was running those aweful, terrible, no good for nothing, Continental GP Tubulars. 19mm front and rear at about 120 psi.

Still had the third fastest women's bike split!
