Yeah, the men's race didn't play out to be as exciting as the women's finish but fun watching anyway. Since I grew up in Des Moines, I think this race is a good excuse to visit next summer. Looks like a great production.[/quote]
What's the history behind this race? How'd Des Moines, Iowa get one of the richest triathlons in the world? Has this area always been a hot spot, or is this a key sponsor home town headquaters?
Not dissing on the location, just wondering the history behind it all. I guess, it's one of those locations, I wouldnt think of as a top triathlon race. Maybe that's why it is!?!?
I'm not too sure. I moved from there ages ago, but we still have family friends there. I don't have any tri contracts there though. From what I can tell the race isn't that old. I believe it originally started in Des Moines and then moved out to the suburbs in West Des Moines for a few years. This year they moved it back to the city to make the multi-loop format easier I believe. The course out in WDM was much more spread out I think.
You're right though that this race seemed to come out of nowhere. Hy-Vee is a Des Moines based grocery store chain in the midwest. I can't believe that in a few short years they've jumped to the front of the sport and are putting out a purse like this. But hey, the competitors seem to like it. I think that there's evidence of that in both Bennett's and Kemper's speeches.
