I've been out of bike racing a long time, and I was wondering at the ease of the whole entry process of this race. It was very laid back, and reminded me of the old days, I liked it. SO what's the deal, these guys are going head to head with the USCF?? If so, how are they doing? Looking at the USCF race and this one, the participation looks about the same, kind of lame really, when you think these are supposed to be championship events. Had a great time out there though with Pauly. They delayed the start about 25 minutes, so it was in the mid 90's already. Was supposed to hit 111 in Lancaster today, so I guess it could have been worse. We had a bit of wind, but not too bad, but all the times rode out slow, probably the heat, and the air just felt really thick. I see a lot of that description on the heat thread going on all over the state today. Still, fun to blow out the pipes with some 28 mph hammering, and you say I get a championship jersey too?? Sweeeettt........

The Washington State TT championships were today, as well - any other STers in attendance?

Gary Tingley's issue with California Bicycle Racing state TTT champs [ In reply to ]

So Gary has issues with CBR because he probably believes that the SCNCA is the one and only true cycling entity in Southern California. After all, its national body-the USCF-has done so much for the local racing scene in Southern California.

Allow me to give a "bigger pond" version to a smaller fish like Mr. Tingley. With cycling clubs seeking sponsorship, it NEVER hurts to have State Champions on the bike club's sponsorship cover letter. Sponsors don't delve into NCNCA, NORBA, USCF, CBR, or ABR affiliations regarding championships; they only see State Champion this, National Champion that, i.e., something that makes that club different than the other clubs seeking similar sponsorship. But that is not why I formed CBR.

I formed CBR because I was unhappy with the local cycling assn., and instead of complaining about it, I actively changed it and have tried to make a difference with local racing venues. I actually had the audacity to boomerang 100% of the annual license fees back to the local racer. This year, we're looking at about $25,000+ being returned to local racers via the bike race purse. Ask Gary Tingley how much the SCNCA has returned to their membership; ask Gary what portion of his beloved $60 USCF annual license comes back to local racing. The USCF once issued a monthly magazine as well as its annual rulebook but no more.

Unfortunately, Mr. Tingley would rather limit the state championships to only the SCNCA, an assn. that has done so much for the local racer. It's people like Gary Tingley that make me think "screw it," and let the SCNCA regain control of their monopoly. But then again, when there's only one assn., the racers really have no choice. Thanks for the posting, Gary...you can tell Jan Luke, Eric Smith, and Greg Aden the fine job you're doing.

First of all thanks for putting on a great event, it was a lot of fun. I wasn't sure why Gary had to rain on our parade yesterday, but after looking at their flyier, I see that he was one of the major sponsors of the other event. So he has some axe to grind I guess. I checked the results of the other state championship, the 23.5 mile one, and your race was just as competitive, and technically you are the 40k championship, they are the 38k championship. SO everyone can get their jerseys, and we can all be happy. DOn't throw in the towel just because of a few bad apples that like to bitch and moan, you are doing a great thing for grass roots cycling, and now having done one of your races, I will do more. Loren said that she will be bringing more girls out also, she really liked racing in your event.. I think that a lot of triathletes would appreciate the no hassle format you have created, and we will get the word out that this is the place to go for some much needed bike race training and racing for the trigeeks out there. I started bike racing just about a year after I started doing tris in the late 70's, and by far, it was the best thing I could have done to take my bike leg to the top pro level. I'm looking forward to getting back into it, and now when I look back at why I quit, a lot of it was the hassle associated with that other orginization....

Keep up your great work,

Hey fredley, you didn't mentione if you had done the race, if so, how did you do?? Give us a race report, always good to see how the tirgeeks do against the roadies...I found it amazing how fast the really old guys are still going. I was going through some tt results from here, and saw the name Dave Spangler. I think he is about 64 now, and he still goes 57+ for 40k. I remember in the old tri days, he was Gary Hooker's partner in Hooker headers,( Gary was the first really great master triathlete, got 11th in Kona overall as a 40+ yr old), and he was going 51+ as a new master back then. Gary would make him all the latest aero stuff, but this was before aero bars. He had a wind tt bar, and was the first to use flat tubing in the bike.......

I've preferred CBR races because you can count on them being well run and rider friendly. Chris listens, considers and responds to input from all corners -- you don't have to be a 1 or 2 to get his ear. And when something goes wrong, he takes ownership of it.

For triathletes here considering road racing, CBR is the place to start.

Hi Monty,

Thanks for asking. I had a pretty good day, and managed to win despite the 108 degree weather, a flatted tubular in my warmup, and having to find a new front wheel when the rim pulled off my H3 2 days before the race.

My "old-guy" time put me in the top 5 overall for the day, and I probably could have gone a little faster - I slowed down after I realized I was going to catch 2nd place shortly after the turnaround. I was on a sub 52 pace at the turnaround, and didn't want to risk blowing when I knew I had the race won.

*EDIT* I didn't finish in the 52s, I shut it down and tempo-ed in in the 54s, it was just too damn hot to risk blowing up when I had the race won - sorry about that, didn't realize how misleading the above statement reads...

That's unbelievable, a 52 for 40k??? You are one sick TT'er, how old are you anyway???? I thought our 95 degrees was bad here, you guys must have had a later start, for it to have been 108. You beat mine and Pauls two man time by yourself, way to go..........

Hi Monty,

Naahhh.... I wasn't that fast... I was on pace for 52 at the turnaround, but I pulled the plug and rolled in at 54 something (which was OK given the weather.) I was almost 2 minutes up on 2nd at the turnaround, so that killed me psychologically - I just tempo-ed out the 2nd half of the race.

I rolled off just after noon, so it was freakin' hot.
