I've been searching for a cheapo 650 wheel to use on the rear for trainer workouts this winter. Can't seem to find anything. Anyone have any suggestions where I might look?

Try a skinny MTB wheel with a Spesh mondo 1" slick - works out about exactly the same size as a 650 - the hub will be a 5mm wider than a road hub but should go in without too many probs. My GF's cannondale sits on Mavic Cross Lands - the worlds first touring R500??
