Fantastic interview. How can you not like this guy!
"Fear struck me right in the heart"
On seeing Lange.
Long Chile was a silly place.

He gives a good interview. Just says whatever goes through his head. Had me cracking up a couple times.

Yeah, I loved it! Great assessment and attitude towards the whole day. The future of Kona is looking very, very bright!

The funny part was him talking about the start of the run and his watch was saying 4:12 per km, but clearly he was running more like 3:40 (based on his pace that we were seeing). I wonder if he started less "hot" if he could have hold Patrick off. What an awesome day. If we add the 220m the swim is shorter, this is like Luc Van Lierde vs Hellriegel 21 years later. Hellriegel does the second fastest IM of all time and still gets beaten by the stronger guy. In fairness I don't really know if Sanders is any less strong than Lange. Sanders probably works harder in the water for a slower time to start off in a deficit. Keep it up Lionel! Also him joking about the 350W for 15 min was funny! I thought he did something like that last year going towards Hawi.

Good to see 'old style talk' back!
That is how we talked back then if asked how it went down.
No politically correct smooth talking it.
He really works for it and is honest about it.
We need more guys like him and Lange who are showing their emotions.
RESPECT!

That's exactly what I was thinking, especially with the old school mustache. It looked like an interview from 1988. I loved it.

I just didn't wanna die man lol
The entire event (IM) is like "death by 1000 cuts" and the best race is minimizing all those cuts and losing less blood than the other guy. - Dev

The best bit is how he seems in awe of how lange passed him "a thing of beauty" i think he said, completely unaware that he finished second, which is in and of itself amazing

Ha!!! That part was awesome, and I think speaks to why so many AG'ers like the guy. We've all been there, doing some crazy descent with friends who are more fearless just bombing down the road.
LS is an age grouper's mind stuck in a pro's body.
Long Chile was a silly place.

Wow. I like Lionel even more after that. The way he is happy and uplifted even in defeat. And the way he genuinely loves the battle, even if he doesn't win after leading for so long . And especially the way he classily embraces his competitor Lange, "I like that guy." And you know he means it.

Never followed Sanders that closely but this interview was awesome. How refreshing to see something so honest and old school. I'm an instant fan.
so seems sanders bonked on the run but he looked to be limping as if major injury...?
