Gearing Effect

Instead of using gear inches as gearing effect, if you were to use the distance travelled by the wheel during the sector where most effective torque is applied to the crank (i.e. 1.30 to 4.30), Anquetil's mysterious extra power in TT's could be more easily explained. Because with a simple instant switch in technique it's possible to extend that sector and distance travelled by the wheel by up to 50 %. What this means is you can increase power output from a 52t chainring to the equivalent of a much larger chainring at the same cadence without having to increase peak torque to the crank and that is how a sustainable power increase can be made for flat TT's.
