Nothing like a known doper winning an age group and clinching a spot at the 70.3 WC!

Congrats to all the finishers, fast times and great splits!

Maybe not quite so fine. I know the WTC drafting stuff is old news, but my buddy who biked an honest 2:26 said it was the most blatant drafting he'd ever seen. A few rotating pacelines of 4-6 guys not even trying to hide it. He saw one ref all day.

I wasn't there, and he might be exaggerating, but he's a pretty level-headed guy.

Not going to help this horse that road 2:04 other than maybe the normal 2-4 minutes he gains from slipstreaming. Regardless he was going so much faster than the average age-grouper it was probably downright dangerous to slip stream.

Mighty fine bike split. I don't think the WC boys have to worry though with the 35 minutes swim

To which age group are you referring to? I'm referring to the 60-64 AG :D

I was referring to Zirbel with the 2:04 bike split. 7 minutes faster than pro and fairly decent pro triathlete Dylan Gleason.

Talked to Dylan today after the race. He's no longer racing pro.

He flew by me on the bike and I had no idea who he was. He definitely was flying on the bike. My hat is off to him. It was fun racing him.

I figured that was the case. Dylan was a great athlete and good biker even in the pro ranks but he never was able to benefit on the other riders around him based on where he was coming out of the swim.

Assuming you are talking about Zirbel, looks like he actually got 3rd in the AG. Tough competition when a pro biker/time trial specialist/doper that has also run a 2:32 marathon gets 3rd in an amateur category (though admittedly, based on these race results, that 2:3x marathon ability is gone for now).

OP referencing Moats. Bike helmet mirror using (to see marshalls approaching) and, if memory serves, testosterone TUE declarant.

Many of us just try to ignore Moats. The second place, Paul Turner, was flying too. 4:51 in the 60-64 age group is very strong even on an easier course. I hope Turner got a slot.
Not sure how Moats lives with himself.
I would love to see Von Berg beat him at World's. Von Berg, from Belgium, is racing St. George.

I had totally forgotten about that guy...too bad he took the AG win.

Oddly enough, at the pre-race meeting I was at they specifically said that helmet mirrors were banned unless you had a presentable medical reason. Seeing as I'm not aware of that being a WTC rule, sounds like a race-specific Kevin Moats rule. Good on the race director, or ref, or whomever made that call.

I ALMOST feel bad for Moats. Seeing him after the race it was clear everyone knows who he is and how he's famous for cheating on multiple fronts. He seemed pretty isolated. But like I said, I just ALMOST feel bad. You reap what you sow.

Mirrors are on the illegal equipment list in the WTC rules - section 5.02 part C. They may have made sure to point it out, but definitely not race specific.

It makes you wonder what he gets out of it. No one is impressed with him; you wonder what intrinsic satisfaction he gets from a sport where he is widely considered a pariah.

Moats went 4:32 to win by 23 mins. in China 2-3 weeks ago. He hasn't lost since his come back in spring 2015. Most of his wins were by 20+ mins. He won the 2015 WC, didn't race the WC in Australia.
FWIW he was the M60-64 USAT #1 last year at 62.
I race in the SE , so I've raced him a bit over the years. I age up next year, a year before him!

I don't use a rearview mirror while training or racing, but using one would be the safer and smarter practice. I train almost exclusively on a trail that is closed to vehicular traffic and occasionally someone (more likely a group) comes by unexpectedly and startles me (happens even more when running). This would not happen if I occasionally checked a rearview mirror to see what, if anything, is behind me. A mirror certainly would not make riding more dangerous. Obviously, the people we see using mirrors while riding (other than in races), are not trying to cheat or gain a competitive advantage. They are just trying to be safe. For that reason, banning mirrors is wrong.

And what medical reason could someone have for needing a mirror?

I had occasion to congratulate and (briefly) visit with both Kevin and Joe Bonness after the race a few years ago at St. Croix. The first thing out of Joe's mouth was, "How was your race today? Let me introduce you to my wife." Total gentleman and he deflected every attempt to talk about himself. The first thing out of Moat's mouth was, "Did you see how fast I was?" Then he proceeded to tell me how many people he beat, how many races he'd won, etc.; it was embarrassing to listen to, truly.

Didn't Joe B step away from active racing due, in part, to guys like Moats? I know he's very unassuming guy and not one to openly criticize fellow competitors but I thought he may have made very subtle/veiled comments as such a few years back.

I too have seen Moats at several races over the years and have witnessed his self-bloviating in transition pre and post race. It sure seems that triathlon success is the sole determinant in his life success definition. Pretty sad actually... I could sort of understand this in a 30 YO but at 62? Come on man, be at least a little self-aware.

Same as needing a snorkel in the swim: neck issues?

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

Sure, neck issues.
But you never had KM ride by drafting using his mirror for non-neck reasons.

I did the race last year. There were definitely pacelines and officials were in the first and last 2-5 miles. The rest was all draft city. The "M-Dot" swim is horrendous.

+1; noted the same. Multiple 2-4 person draft packs...always weird that it's more than likely 2 or more people involved in most passes; rarely just a sole rider...and I get passed a lot.

I'm not that familiar with the course since I haven't done this race, but why couldn't they do a two loop swim course here? Would it just be too easy for people to cheat? They could maybe even do a section running along the beach. It seems like that would be much better than an "M-dot" swim.
