I first went in '89 and you had to qualify then. It was the first year that I decided to go and I got the spot at the Tupper Lake 1/2 Ironman.

They were accepting applications and had a waiting list through at least '84 or '85.

I raced in the Oct. '82 race without any restrictions or qualifications (remember there were 2 IMH races in '82). I just signed up. It was '83 or "84 thet they had some "new" qualifications. I think it was "84, not sure. I remember one was to be a Cat 1 or CAT 2 cyclist, have ran a sub "something" marathon. For a while there were not qualifying races. Heck, Ironman Canada was not an "Ironman" until '86. We had like 300 or so in that first Ironman Canada race.
