Clawing, yes, but he hasn't been able to crack Contador. He needs to make up at least a minute and I don't see that happening. Would to see it though.

GP Quebec is tomorrow. The course has fewer climbing compared to the previous four editions. Still won't be a large bunch sprint,

OPQS looks strong, with at least 4 people (Alaphilippe, Stybar, Meersman, and Trentin) capable of winning; it's almost a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. Katusha has Kristoff, who may be able to survive the hills.

My pick would be:

Caddy: GvA (sentimental pick)
Steak knives: Gerrans
Fired: OPQS minion #1 (say Alaphilippe)

Thomas, Vichot, Hermans, Wellens, Navardauskas, Rui Costa, and OPQS minion # 2 (say Trentin)

well at least i got one of podium finishers...

Tejay looked strong, and surprised that he was able to bridge up and hold the gap for a while. Might be a factor in Sunday's race

I think someone mentioned earlier that Adam Hanson is a beast. As an extra large rider myself, I loved today's finish. He pulled a Jensee. The dude has ridden 10 straight GTs. Good on him.

So it's that time of the year again as the pro cycling season winds down. In addition to la Vuelta, we have Vattenfall Classic (sprinter borefest), GP Ouest France (somewhat interesting), GP Quebec (interesting last lap), GP Montreal (interesting last lap), UCI RR Championship (should be a good one), and Lombardia, not to mention the various 2.HC races such as Paris-Tours.

Discuss any and all of these races.

I'll start.

For Vuelta, Quintana, Uran, and Froome. Outsiders include Rodriguez, Samuel Sanchez, Dan Martin, Aru, Pinot, Barguil, and Rider #15. Rodriguez will probably take the points jersey and may have a good shot at the overall, but there will be ~ 45 km of individual time trialing split into two days. If Rider #15 were to place on the podium again...

For stages hunting, stages 3, 7, and 13 for the classics specialists such as Gilbert, Sagan, and Cancellara. Also predict that Louis Meintjes may just win a stage.

one of the podium but 5 of the rest of the 7, turning this into a consolation prize delux... Really didn't see Contador being this good.

Best stage racer of his generation but damn.. Without getting into doping too bad that he lost a Giro and a Tour title. 8 GT wins with at least two in each would be great for the history books, not that 6 isn't impressive enough.

I think he said he had about 16 days off the bike after the injury. I guess he just had so much residual fitness from his great spring.

As for Froome for the most part he lost it in the TT's which is interesting. Not going to be as easy to win his second GT as it might have seemed after his TdF win.But chapeau to him too.

I wonder how this makes the other guys feel to be beaten by two guys coming off injury layoffs.

No doubt, even not at their best they're in a different class over who is there. Next year's TdF should be something else with the two of them, Nibali and Quintana.

got that right! i somehow just don't get as excited for stage races these days. Degenkolb has shown himself to be a strong contender for World's, but i'd still maintain that it's gonna be a lot harder than what most expect.

I'll admit I've only been watching the Vuelta selectively. The problem with the stage races is you really never know when it's going to be exciting whereas one day races almost always are.

Other than Degenkolb I figure Sagan would be a contender in theory. Gilbert could also be in the mix.

Gerrans, Costa, Valverde, FC and of course Kwiatkowski -- pretty wide open WC.

Have the say the latter and Aru are the breakout riders of the year. Those guys are good.

that was some impressive team work there. Pieter Wiening oughta be the guy every classics specialist wants on his team. In Liege it was his gangly frame dragging back the duo of Caruso and Pozzovivo; ditto today. Noteworthy that Gerrans was actually dropped on the climbs, but his teammates brought everything back. The run-in of Ponferrada won't allow as much of a recovery time, but the other national teams should really think hard about making the race aggressive or it may just end up with a small group sprint.

Rui Costa also looked strong, and i thought he may just have sneaked one away the same way he did in 2011. Perhaps it'd have been different had someone else went with him when he attacked.

Didn't catch the race today but I think this is the first time somebody has won both Quebec races so congrats to Gerrans. Luckily for him he should also have a strong team in Ponferrada.

I think Costa as well as Gallopin are also guys that could be in the mix. Really the more I think about it almost anyone could win.

Another great Vuelta, missed Horner and Quintana being in the mix

Now onto the Worlds & Lombardia, then I can shut off my second monitor at work with cycling until January

Also excited to watch Voigt attempt the hour record on Thursday.

Anyone planning a trip to Richmond VA next September. I am most likely making the trip for the road race on the last Sunday

well, the Belgians are looking strong for the road race, as does AUS. Good for GvA's racing mojo to take a win after so many second places.

What lid is Tony Martin wearing....doesn't look like the McLaren.

Wow....nice win by BMC. Bit of a surprise as most had OPQS or Orica as the overall favorites.

Looked like BMC benefitted greatly from the weather. Fine for them but rain and wind picked op for OPQS.

What in the world happened to Sky? Down to 4 guys half way?

I missed some of the last 20 minutes because of the safety briefing on the plane....but it didn't look like the roads were too wet except for maybe the last few km?

Yeah, Sky looked like a bunch of amateurs out there. Very surprising.....but in hindsight, a bit indicative if their whole year, I guess. Just never had they well-drilled feeling of years past.

BMC started almost 30 minutes earlier and had good conditions. On that course, with descent near end, it would make a significant difference, even if OPQS only had to ride 5 minutes in rain.

OPQS were very cautious on the last descent with 2 km to go. Having said that BMC did a great ride (Rohan Dennis seems to be settling in nicely); from the coverage I saw there wasn't one moment that OPQS, or for matter any other team, were ahead of them.

especially with all those wicked roundabouts and the Rabo accident earlier. that crash was quite horrific and was probably made worse due to those jutting legs of the barriers (same type that sent Stybar sommersaulting)

also the UCI feed has Phil commentating... ugh

edit: Just watched the replay. tbf, OPQS was behind by 10 seconds or so going into the final climb. There was definitely more wind, but it wasn't like they lost the lead on the descent.

Also, Evelyn Stevens dropping off on the descent while her teammates chug forward. I'm not quite sure what to make of it, other than i think her bike handling abilities may cost her yet another medal in the road race

Have to admit that I don't get the attention Evelyn receives. I don't think she's a good bike racer (not a "bad" racer just not "good"), I'd take Carmen or Tayler from her team or AP or ...
