Shocking. Freestyle was my life throughout the 80s and into the early 90s. Was incredible to watch the journey from a young kid in the sport to what he managed to accomplish over the years. I t was cool to see him move over to tri as he retired.
Sad to see such a talent gone.

Wow!

Dave was a few years younger than me but we chewed up the same BMX parks as teens since we both lived in the Syracuse area. His father and my father worked together as well.

I didn't really know him since we were four years apart and raced in different age groups but I remember him being a cool kid. My brother must have raced against him since they were the same age. I think the Mirra's ended up moving to North Carolina and I didn't hear much about him until I saw him on the X Games years later.

Dude was a bonafide BMX god! None better!

Saw him at a few 70.3 races over the last couple of years. He and my brother were close rackmates a couple of times due to M last names.

Very sad! Seems like the world was his.

When someone is lost to suicide, I always wish they could've seen the outpouring of goodwill beforehand. Dave had a positive impact on so many people... he'll be missed.

I guess we never really know what is going on in someone's head. It's like how we put Hollywood stars and millionaires up on some pedestal as they have the outwards appearance of happiness, yet many turn to drugs or commit suicide.
