OK, Just picking the brains of the ST tribe. Given that I am doing Olymp. racing mostly, what would you get in the middle to upper price range of tri bikes? Please don't upset me and list any road bikes, I am a believer in tri bikes for tri's and road bikes for road. Please list any neat doo dads to go with it like ZG brakes or any other bike candy. And, to sweeten the pot, if I end up getting the bike you list I'll send one lucky winner some free ZB schwag! Bring it!

[/url]The CAT Cheetah represents a configuration which does full justice to the properties of carbon fiber / epoxy composites, and displays high torsional strength and excellent aerodynamics. These aerodynamic properties have been documented by the test report carried out on several aeroframes by the renowned and respected German magazine "Tour Magazine".

An entirely new kind of front fork / handlebar unit ("X Forks") was developed for the extremely stiff monocoque frame. The fork blades pass the fork bridge up to handlebar height and make a conventional stem and handlebar unnecessary.

    Guru Chron'Alu -- it's a bike that doesn't get in the way of the rider. As good as anything out there, but reasonably priced. Considering how good it it, I think it's a bargain. No frills, but no corner cutting either. All aluminum, no carbon rear-end (which is superflous anyway, methinks). Build it with Ultegra, or DA if you've got a little extra $$. This is a bike that should last a long time and is fast enough to win any race on (if you've got the engine, of course).

    I'm a believer that bikes should be solid, not gimicky. Thus, no doo dads to recommend, but for Time RSX pedals. these are the best pedals out there right now, about a step ahead of SPDSL and 3 steps ahead of Speedplay.

    Personally, I would go custom--because why not. That being said I would offer two different choices. Both are time tested, precision builders. They have the experience and the reputation to be able to sufccessfully build one-off frames. I also narrowed it down to the unique, I think that Ves would fall under this category but yaqui is often touted on this forum, so I will leave it to others to introduce his work.

    Yamaguchi is the hero of many kerin riders, and builds beautiful frames. The steel he is using has a ridiculously thin minor diameter, but it is steel so it is incredibly strong and comfortable for long distance racing. I like his forks and time trial bars as well. All options are customizable, not just fit. If you come up with a great idea, he will make it happen.

    David made many of the olympic team bikes and was a poineer of the aero tubing revolution. He has wind tunnel pedigree up the wahoo. I think he used to work in the airplane industry--or something similar. If you want you can get the origional reynolds aero aluminum tubeset, which rocked.

    As for goodies--MDT is a good source. Especially their steel forks.

    I can't find a picture of one but, Indurain used to ride a campy front disk with four holes in the center. I guess the modern equivalent would be the HED cona coast but that was only offered on the rear.

    As for brakes. I have the Dura-Ace AX brakes pictured above. I don't recomend them unless you are going for that vintage look. What did kick ass though, were the mavic brakes that came with the ZAP group. The lever folded flush with the body of the caliper and hte single pivot had weak shoulders so it hugged the fork crown. I think there was a dia comp model that performed similarly.

    Also, keywin pedals. Superlight, relativly cheap and if you hit a pedal in a corner you wont skip as much--the plastic just sort of grinds away. The ability to confidantly pedal through corners is worth some serious time:

    Yaqui. Scandium tubes w/ carbon stays. DE geometry (custom tweaked if you need it). Easton EC90 Aero or Ouzo Aero Pro fork to match head tube geometry. Full Record10 Carbon gruppo. Bora front and Ghibli rear. Record bottle cages on the frame.

    I'll let the other guys fill in a sexy front end, 'cause Ves will spec Syntace. ;-)

    My recommendation is the Litespeed Tachyon. It has good geometry, with a real short head tube. I don't know if you want it to last a long time, but it will. Titanium resells better than most other frame materials. I doubt the 105 is going to slow you down any. Plus unlike the other Litespeeds, you don't pay for fancy wheels that they choose. You can choose race wheels.

    It comes in at around $2500 which still is not as low as Tom. Ds option but I think what the Tachyon lacks in components, it by far makes up in frame and good geometry.

    Another vote for Elite. Even if you buy a stock T Class you can customize your paint. That's one of the coolest things about owning an Elite, it doesn't look like every other Elite out there. Customer service is above and beyond.
