Best tri over 1000 participants (worldwide)

This is for 2015. What is "best?" Ambiance, safety, value (which doesn't mean cheap, it means you get at or more than your money's worth), experience, competitiveness, just the best race you feel that you did this year, or that you spectated or volunteered at.

Alpe d'Huez (long distance).

Great ambiance, good overall safety, fair registration fees. Field is fairly deep and the course challenging enough to justify the trip. Plus the scenery is incredible.
Definitely up there.

Husky Long Course, Jervis Bay in NSW, Australia.

Impossible to get a more scenic course. Great value. Two hours from Sydney. Attracts pros even though there is no pro prize purse. Has a "Race Ya Mates" category. Sneaks in with 1026 finishers last year.

I was lucky enough to do Kona this year, I'm not sure how it could be anything else.

USAT Nationals in Milwaukee. Fantastic swim venue: the first 200m or so are practically in a "stadium" with spectators able to view you from three sides. The bike course was completely closed to traffic so that's about as safe as you can get. It was also a very fair bike course. Run course was nice with the first half out along Lake Michigan and a fantastic finish line.

Second choice would be Lifetime Chicago. They really do a heck of a job of putting on a race literally smack in the middle of one of the largest, busiest, and most beautiful cities in North America.

Haha. Biggest event I've done that wasn't a total sh*tshow (aka ITU Chicago).

Nations Tri in DC

Thousands of athletes (I think just the Olympic had over 2k), completely closed course (in DC!), wonderfully organized and went off without a hitch.

I thought IM Tahoe was an awesome event. Beautiful course for the swim, bike, and run. Plenty of lodging options, race week sign up. R.I.P.
