Best Tire/PSI Set Up - Rear Track Wheel w/Disc Cover for Velodrome Racing
Quote | Reply
Seeking the best, or at least good enough, rear clincher tire and appropriate psi for timed and group track bike racing:

Rim - Mavic CXP33 clincher (19.4 mm wide) with disc cover.
Bike - Cervelo P3 Aluminum. Rider - 180 lbs.
Venue - Outdoor, smooth concrete, 333.33 meter velodrome.
Tube - latex
Current Tire - 23 mm Michelin Pro Race 2

Due to the disc cover and P3's curved seat tube I assume its really only the trailing edge of the rim/tire interface that matter aero-wise. So, what tire would provide acceptable aero-ness with good rolling resistance on a very smooth velodrome?

Maybe go with a 23mm Continental 4000s?

What psi would be best for the track - keeping in mind the limitations of the clincher rim and tire?

Also, up front we have the options of using either a tubular Zipp 404 (not sure of the year - its dimpled) with dimpled Zipp Tangente tire or an old very narrow 40mm deep Campy Vento (like a Shamal) with any clincher tire...?

Thanks.

Disc cover would be illegal on the track in Australia, and there are probably better tyres than a GP 4000s on the track where puncture protection is largely irrelevant.

My guess... 20mm Supersonic, 23mm Supersonic, Vittoria track tire.

What's on the front?

Will look into a Conti Supersonic. Plan to use a Zipp Tangente tubular tire on a Zipp 404 up front. Thanks.

I've tested supersonics as being quite fast, and I've never been to a velodrome where covers were legal... but there may be one out there? Dunno.

The good track tyres don't come in clincher, so you'll give up a bit to high-end track tubulars, but it's not the end of the world.

Two FYIs (as someone who used to race Cervelo TT bikes on a track)
Be aware that extended use of a P3 on a velodrome w/ changing gears and wheels will chew up the dropouts pretty quickly- and for big standing starts there's quite a bit less certainty that your rear wheel will hold.

Also, the handling won't be great- it won't be horrid, but it isn't good compared to a legit track bike.

Came across what looked to be a good deal and got a Michelin Pro4 Comp Limited for the rear. Got a Dyma wheelcover as well. The rules allow covers but if we face reluctance we can remove it quite quickly. Thanks for the replies. David K
