I'm going to be in Barnardsville, NC August 3–5. I'm looking for safe, solid route suggestions.

You may want to contact Ex-cyclist on here. He's an AVL native.

The Bakery ride leaves Fuddruckers on SAturday at the quite civilized time of 9 or 9;30, can never remember.

That area is fabulous and beautiful! Usually I don't make it too complicated. I enjoy and have no problem riding on my own...I'd go out the front door and just start riding. Then turn around when you are 1/3 of the time you want to go and come back another route.

I agree. That area is great. Just go out and ride.
You're spitting distance to Pisgah. If you want to ditch the road bike, there are hundreds of miles of trails. It's also pretty nice road riding through there, but be super vigilant as drivers are paying more attention the the waterfalls and scenery than cyclists.
If you want a killer climb, ride up to Mt. Mitchell. Take a light because the tunnels can get dark.

Otherwise, just enjoy the farm land and scenery.

Awesome! Thanks guys.

I'm new to elevation (Fla native) so I was worried about getting stranded somewhere without water or something. We're planning on climbing Mt. Mitchell the first morning we're there from Asheville. We're going into Pisgah the last day after we leave. So we're open that middle day, so we can just explore that day. If there is another must-do climb, let me know.

If you climb Mitchel bring cash. They have a cool little store on top with water, gatorade, and food but they dont take ccs.

You aren't that far from Mars Hill that hosts the wonderful Hot Doggett 100. They have a 60 mile ride that still has the great climbing.

Check out the options here:

Mt. Mitchell is a great ride from Asheville. You can stop at Craggy Gardens to refill bottles on the way there.

Heading the other way to the top of Mt. Pisgah is a nice ride as well. There is a store at the top to refill bottles and buy snacks too.

Asheville Bakery Ride is 10am every morning starting from the Fuddruckers on Charlotte Street. This is the route: https://www.strava.com/activities/650945147. These guys are no joke; they tear my legs off each weekend but a great and welcoming group.

The store on top of Mt Mitchell does accept CC
The Parkway in town is overrated—lots of traffic and distracted drivers. It's okay once you get North out of the city. Good long climb up to Craggy Gardens.

Epic Climbs:
I would put Doggett up there with Mitchell but not quite as good of a view. Climbing 151 to Pisgah is also great - enjoyed that last Sunday.

Some route suggestions:
Paint Fork has some great climbing: https://www.strava.com/activities/411530883
Great roads, pretty steep on North part of loop: https://www.strava.com/activities/381274023
One of my favorite loops that passes through Burnsville (just north of barnardsville) - https://www.strava.com/activities/145892918
Hot Doggett Course kind of near the area: https://www.strava.com/activities/635463110

Really can't go wrong where you are. My parents have a house just North of Barnardsville and enjoy exploring those back roads. Very hilly though. Also, most gas stations are closed on Sundays in the area so plan ahead since it will be hot.

Agree with the above. Both Hot Doggett routes are outstanding - and suitably tough. For something shorter (and easier) you can ride the Barnardsville Butt Buster. The Paint Fork climb is not a long climb, but it will be memorable.
