BB30 Bottom Bracket question

is it possible to damage the bearings (easily to moderately) from removing a crank a handful of times by pounding it out with a rubber mallet?

Yes but it in my opinion it would be unlikely.

A BB30 crank really shouldn't be fitting into the bearings that tightly, or at least the ones I've used haven't.

Yes.

You should only have to tap it a few times. Sometimes the hard ano on the crank spindle pushes the tolerances a bit and makes a snug fit. If it ned more force than that there may be other issues at play like alignment.
