More ocean swimming. after a brief drop in temperature (low 60s), the ocean is recovering to a balmy 68-70 degrees.

Aug-9
Easy morning ocean swim at Shaw's Cove. 2,222 yards in 28:10, including a double Portage excursion (swim through a 15 yard shoulder-wide crack in the rocks with surges both ways from the waves.)
Noonish bike ride of 15.3 miles in 47 minutes with 2346 feet of climbing

Aug-10
A longer morning ocean swim of 3318 yards in 37:49. The usual Shaw's Cove/Seal Rock plus extra credit swimming the rocky shallows of Rockpile.
Run at noon; 6.3 miles in 56 minutes with 407 feet of climbing

Today
Another ocean swim, similar to yesterday's but pushed a bit harder - 3169 yards in 34:10. We bid good luck to three of our crew that are swimming Alcatraz this weekend (wish I was going, but I have Naples Island 3 mile swim on Sunday)
A bike/run brick at lunch: Bike - 11 miles in 40 minutes with 900 feet of climbing immediately followed with a 1.4 mile run in 10:47 with a whopping 68 feet of climbing.
Might have a evening ocean swim, if others can get their act together.

Half,
You doing Tiki this year? I presume so... It is a possible in my schedule (which doesn't usually happen).... Would you fly into John Wayne (SNA) or San Diego? (But... I could visit a buddy in Laguna Niguel on the way down if I go to SNA). Anyways... Just wondering...

...Now, let's get back to that taper for Nationals.

San Diego is closer, but not by much - 15 minutes, but traffic can upset that. I'll be there. I need another tiki! It'd be great if you could make it. Drag Tigerchik out here, too!
I won't be doing Nationals. Just prefer the local meets and messing about in the ocean.

I had a fun little swim (1331 yards) in the ocean last night. We swam through rock cracks, into caves and someone found an underwater arch to swim through, but I missed that one. Followed up with a gropup dinner at a Thai restaurant where I also had a Mai Thai!

This morning, back at Shaw's cover before sunrise, I took lead and we went through the Portage at high tide - not recommended because the surf will push you up onto the barely submerged rocks we normally swim beneath. It was a challenge and fun. Then, up to Seal Rock where we swam the crack, there, both directions. On the return, another Portage swim. Some of us met up for breakfast where I had blueberry pancakes.
3745 yards in 40 minutes.

It is. If you could find the time (Tiki Swim?) I'll host you and get you to some group swims out of Shaw's and such. (You're faster than most everybody there [except me :)])
BTW: those are some nice 100 repeats... maybe you are faster than me!!

Aug 14
About a 1000 yard warm-up swim in Los Alamitos Bay, for the Naples Island 3-mile swim.
Wasn't quite 3 miles. I got 4969 yards on my Suunto and finished that in just under 1:04, or about a 1:17/100 pace. I won my age group and placed 7th overall. Within 500 yards of the start, I bridged up to the group of 7 and stayed in their bubbles. One guy dropped out after about a mile and I thought this woman was going to, too. But, she hung in there and I didn't. I started falling off pace about 2/3 through it - a place where the water was warmer, like 75 rather than 70ish at the start/finish. By the end, they pulled 2 minutes on me and I had nobody behind me that I could see. 1, 2 and 3 all had the same times (used chip timing). 4, 5 and 6 were within 5 seconds of the leaders. I would have loved to see that finish! My buddy, 54 year old Bryan Buck, got second. He's still an active lifeguard.

Today
I didn't swim. My shoulders are pretty tired from yesterday's race. However, I did get a little 4.5 mile run in the morning and a 13 mile bike ride at lunch - where it just got over 100 degrees. Kind of dug that, though!

OOOOO! The water temp dropped down to 65. I didn't wear a wetsuit and got a bit chilled for our 2178 yard trip from Shaw's to Seal Rock and back. I couldn't stay and tread water while waiting for the regroup, and swam back hard just to stay warm.
At 11:30 I got a run in, half road and half trail with one good hill - 4 miles in 37:50. Heatwave subsiding (hah) down to 95 degrees!

My training this year has been off in comparison to recent years. Lots has to do with the arrival of 140tribaby in February.

But, I decided to try the USMS 10k postal swim in the 50m pool. I was about 11+ mins off last year's time, but I'm okay with it.

2:28:04. It's like doing 100 x 100 @ 1:30, holding 1:28. I'll take it, and put together a better year next year. After a 3m OWS in September, I'll shift a bit to the fall run series in town, to include a 5k put on by my wife's school, the 5k Oktoberfest race (the trophy is a 1l plastic beer stein and one fill up), a 4m pub run (drink 12oz Guinness at each stop), and a 15k. I did the 15k in 63 last year, which is completely overachieving for this early 40s lifelong swimmer who has a touch of muffin top and skinny swimmer legs. I surprised at least a few former college track runners-turned triathletes last year, when I ran past at 13-15k.

I used to donate a lot... and then I started racing more and it's never fit into my schedule. I'd like to do it some more, somehow.

Aug 17
A Shaw's Cove morning of 2766 yards in 33:18. Then, at lunch a quick brick - 4.8 mile bike in 15:41 followed by a 1.5 mile run in 11:26

Aug 18
Shaw's again - 2243 yards in 25:32 and that's all I did.

Aug 19
Another Shaw's - 2587 in 31:10 and nothing else - Took a friend down to San Diego to DeSoto Sports so she could get a T1 wetsuit (and loves it) In fact I have her two prior suits that I will be posting in classifieds tomorrow (I think) - in case you (any of you) know a woman looking for one.

Aug 20
A short 1.5 mile run in 12:55 to prep for the Don Burns 1 mile madhouse, body bashing, surf crashing, cold water swim.
The swim race: I won my division, placed 20th overall in 19:40. My GPS clocked 1653 yards. Not a mile, but a great time for me for a pool mile! We haqd some pretty big surf and about 66 degree water - no wetsuit.
Post race run - 5 miles in 39:48

Aug 21
Shaw's once more - 2834 yards in 34:16. Then spent the rest of the day major house cleaning (ant problem).

I'm looking into the feasibility of getting to Fiji for a 10k swim in October. Ok, more than just the 10k swim... a little sightseeing, some partying, some spa.. etc. But I've been wanting to do a 10k swim again. I'm much better prepared than last time.

Please think of me when you consider it again. A bunch of people I now swim with were there when we did that Reader's Digest version. They'd also like to give it another try, although for some of them, 13 miles is a walk (swim?) in the park.

Did a noontime brick: 9.2 mile ride in 30 minutes followed by a 1.6 mile run in 11:41. I have two more 2-mile ocean swims, a trail half-marathon and a sprint tri (on the 11th, too) to wrap up my season.
