I think we should have a month two guppy/fish challenge. If the 100/100 is anything to go by, we might have a shot now. And I really need to get back in the water...

Back from a rest week interjected with a 5k and 10k pain week. Oh, and family vacation. I think I managed to turn lazy river into a competitive sport. And vertical kicking while hanging with my 7 yr old. Two 10k and two 10 mile runs... and a couple of short bike rides.

First day back = sprint day.

W/u (400s, 300k, 200p, 100drill)

6 x 25m sprint on 1:00

Good luck, esp. in 10k! Did a 3800 IM cruz for a rare long continuous swim... clock watched 1:15/100 metres the whole way. 47:30

Hey there fishies,

I really enjoy the OWS part of triathlons. I'd like to compete in a 10k or 5k swim in the next year. I Live in Austin and would like to do a race close by. Any suggestions?

Go to USMS and check out the open water sections. Bear in mind 'real' ow races don't permit wetsuits as FINA does not allow them at all.

Lake Travis Relay. I'm doing the solo. That is, if I can find a kayak for my wife/guide/sherpa.

American Swimming Association is HQ'ed right in Austin. They host tons of OWS.

Also, here in Tulsa, we're hosting the Tall Chief swim. It's in a private lake with no boats. 1m, 2m, and 3m (4.9k) races.

There's also a wetsuit division, but the race is only 3k. I'm already signed up.

I spent 20 minutes of my lunch in the slosh bucket here at work. I think it's around 90°F. With my big OWS on Sunday, I didn't do much at all...

Between Garmin Connect and the Global Corporate Challenge going on at work, I've got enough places to track my activities. Plus I am going to europe to ride bikes... So swim mileage won't be stellar this Aug. I was willing to join y'all in July (tracking on ST, that is), but 'meh' on logging time in Aug. if you think it'll alter the results, well then, I would fry.

W/u 1,000 misc
12 x 75m (50k, 25s, odds stroke, even free) on 10 sec rest
8 x 100m (all free pull) on 1:35
4 x 200m (odds 50 swim then 50 kick, repeat... Evens 50 swim and 50 kick repeat) I don't recall the send off!
1 x 800m swim on 1:25 pace.

In a couple of weeks time I am headed off on holiday to Gan Canaria and will not have access to a pool. I am keen to do a load of OWS in the sea but have very little experience. I have done quite a few IM races in the sea, but not much outside of that. What do you guys tend to do when you OWS somewhere new? Do you swim parallel to the shore? or try to set up some sort of loop using landmarks?

Would appreciate any advice

Thanks,

Will

Usually get a bit busy to write the set list of my swim training on here. I have had a medical issue that has effected my cycling this season . Whikle I am able to ride not at the ability to train or racing effectively. Since i am able to run and swim I took this time to increase swim volume. As some one who is in his 30th season as a triathlete It's fun to see my highest volume totals ever at age 59. As a competitive runner my mileage totals exceeded 100 plus [per week. The swim volume is newer to me. I always stayed in the 10,000-12,000 range weekly. I am exceeding 20,000 for the first time, I know that's not a lot for those of you with strong backgrounds it is for me.. While I am a strong swimmer for the 55-59 age group usually in lead group. I see the real difference when I compete in open water races against pure swimmers my age. ( get my butt thrashed). I am seeing strength gains for longer sets.
Here is Friday's set
11x150 as warmup as 100 swim/50 kick
4x200 pull
6x75 25 kick/50 swim
6x100 evens fast pull
10x50
200 cooldown
4200 scy

I would certainly try to find a group to swim with. OWS by yourself is kinda risky. But, let's say there's a bunch of surfers out there, maybe then I would go solo. I'd swim just outside the break, parallel to shore and swim for some predetermined amount of time. Use some landmarks to turn at lifeguard towers, buildings, a patch of trees, whatever. Then afterwards, go onto a mapping app (I like gmaps-pedometer) to figure out how far I went. You should be able to see the landmarks you used in the satellite view.
