April Swim Thread - Fish stories

Hey all you fellow fishies that signed up for the April challenge. I screwed it up and had to delete it. Please sign up again. Apparently you can make a challenge with an end date earlier than the start date, which makes it very hard to tally up the month's yardages.

Today, April 1 (not fooling)

1000s
10x100 kwf alt strokes
5x100 alt pull/fr
5x100 as [25k/50s/25k] alt strokes

3000 sc yardages

This was after a ten mile run, so was not pushed hard at all.

Well I needed 4100m on 31 March to hit 90,000m for the month, but due to work meetings, I got to the pool with only 1:12 left before it closed, and pretty well swam continuously pretty hard and crammed in 3800m (it may have been 3900m but lost count at one point). In any case, ended the month at 89,700m. So close. I was contemplating coming back to the pool for a late evening swim to get over the top, but my son (19) had a tough day and wanted some father-son time to talk so I gladly passed up on the final few meters (although on second thought I should have suggested we go swim together). So back to the start line this month for another 90000m attempt. This month has 1 less day and I have two weeks of biz travel which makes the days at home more critical.

I have t had much of a chance to train consistently lately, due to the arrival of 140tribaby, brought home on February 11. I entered our masters meet today, and swam the 500 (5:26) and 1650 (18:51). Both are well off my times from USMS nationals last year (17:33) but the mile was the state-level version of an "all-comers" record. No one in my AG has swam a faster mile inside state boundaries. That's not really saying much, but I'm okay with it. I forgot to ask for a counter, so I counted on my own: I swam 100 in each third of my lane (right side, black line, left side, black line, etc), with an open turn at 825 to check the scoreboard for the halfway split.

For both races, I was completely outside the pain zone. I was mostly trying to get some good turns. I also breathed mostly right side, and I'm sure I'm going to have the adult-onset experts telling me I should breathe bilateral.

Wow! Congrats on both counts — 140tribaby and some very speedy swims. You'd lap me once if not twice in the 1650. And, I can't make babies anymore, either.

I swam in the ocean this morning. Wore my wetsuit & got blasted by this gal who told me I should swim with the other wet suited triathletes rather than with the "pure" open water swimmers. Who rely only on their bioprene. Others heard the remark and respect my abilities and subsequently booted her from the group. I got several messages apologizing for her behavior. I also lost my GPS watch in the heavy surf this morning. Sucks. But got in about 1.6 miles in 57 deg heavy surf water. I followed that up with an 8.3 mile run/ hike to another beach where I spotted a whale about 60 feet offshore.

Race day, Three Creeks Half Marathon. First race in the M45-49 AG. 1:23:08, good enough for 7th OA and 1st in AG

4/4
Damn, I did something to my left ankle racing, it hurts like a mo-fo this morning, weird as it was fine yesterday.

Swim
w/u
450 build
50 all out
m/s
500 paddles & buoy
500 straight, med-effort
5 x 100
w/d
150 (50 each: back, breast, free)

Will try a recovery run later if the ankle feels significantly better. It seems to have loosened up walking around this morning.

Had a good eyeball on the scoreboard on the return 25s in my 800. Pretty sure they fotgot to ring the bell for me. I looked up around 780 to 785 and the clock said 8.44 so I put my head down and sprinted. 8.56.90 with 400s of 4.28.69 and 4.28.21 for a nice negative split.

Just did my first masters swim yesterday, it was awesome b/c I got my ass kicked. Not sure of the actual set but ended up around 4800 yards, which is the furthest I've ever swum. Getting there...

I will post some pictures when I get back home, but I am over in Dresden Germany for some business and found a 50m old school East German era pool 1.5K walk from my hotel. So today I did an early morning 3500m swim and an evening 4000m swim. Really nice 50m long course:

I have been targeting 90k swimming per month with these challenges and it occurred to me that today is the 99th day of the year, so I checked my yearly total and surpassed 300k (302K as of today). That's usually a decent year of swimming for me. Of course, I did zero run and XC skiing this winter, so the swimming did not seem like "that much"...basically a bit under 1 hour of swimming per day. I am used to doing 2+ hours of training per day spread over many sports. Right now it is mainly swim and some trainer time. Definitely feeling fit based on my bike FTP. Swim times have also come down a few seconds per 100m, but seems I can hold form and speed for longer sets.

Oh and today it was pretty funny some guy in an IM Austria hat ends up in my lane and next thing you know he is drafting my feet, then I am drafting him and it went on like we were in a triathlon swim leg in a respectful way each taking our pulls! No communication due to language barrier but mutual respect.

Ok... Right thread. I think. It has been a while, and I haven't got used to the new format.

The Oregon Masters Meet 1500 was Hot yesterday. 50m pool. I swam a 19:51. Most folks were suffering with the heat, and posted times slower than the seed time. 100m and 800m today.

:-(

2600 yds for me today. The clock and I had a difference of opinion on the 200s. I thought they were about 2:25s, and the clock said 2:30, 2:32, 2:30.

8 x 200 #3, 5, 7 fast
100 kick
8 x 100 on 1:35 easy
100 kick

Difference of opinion? The clock, or my body, just plain revolted against me this morning. I probably could've water-jogged faster.

4/8
AM Swim, slow day
w/u 600 easy
6 x 100 (59=0 fist, 50 steady)
m/s
3 x 800 -1 band & buoy -2 steady -3 buoy easy, alt breath
w/d
400 (alt 50 back/breast)
PM run, 4.1 miles in 30 minutes, left foot feels like crap, not recovering from last weekend's race

4/9
Brick w/o
2-hour trainer ride
8 mile run in 52:50, doped myself up on Ibuprofin, it's a hell of a drug!

4/10
20 mile run in 2:27:18

4/11
AM Swim, pay a small price for yesterday's run. Feel good with plenty of energy, but absolutely no snap to my stroke, very slow with the fast toys.
w/u
300 easy
m/s 2 x 400 (1-band/buoy, 2-buoy)
3 x 300 (1-free, 2-buoy, 3-paddle/buoy)

5 x 100 (1-3 fist, 4-buoy, 5-buoy/paddles)
w/d
200 back/breast x 100
PM run, easy 4 mile recovery planned.
