Aero road bar of choice these days??
Currently building an new S5...

I want to get some new aero road bars. The new Cervelo bars look good, but there is no where to mount the "out front" Garmin or SRM mount.

Looking at Enve SES and Zipp SL70. I wouldn't mind aluminum bars, but want them as aero as possible.

Thoughts??

I have the SES aero road bars with the aero bars also installed on a 2014 S5. Definitely pleased with them, but I don't think there's enough room at the stem to mount an "out front" Garmin mount.

I saw that mount... I already have a stem though. I need to see that mount will fit the screws.

I have the Zipp Vuka Sprint bars and they are absolutely money! Love the feel and very stiff. I've heard great things about the SL70 as well. I would imagine between them all you really aren't giving up much and any of those would be good. I had plenty of room to install a k edge mount

I sent you pics of my Zipp bars.
I have also had the Enve.
You can mount a powercontrol on either- I did.
The Enve bars are way narrow at hoods. Make sure you consider that.

My new bike will have the 3T AeroTundo bars on it...mostly because I'm not a fan of the "compact drop" that basically EVERY other aero road bar uses :-/

Please don't let it be steel ;)

Well...if the last 2 months or so of only riding my old steel '86 Bianchi has taught me anything, it's:

a.) nice wheels AND tires can make even a nearly 30 year old bike good enough for fast group rides (even with downtube shifters)

and

b.) with frames, as with many things, it's not so much the material, but what you DO with it that counts ;-)

So yes...it will be made from steel...but it's safe to say it will be unique, even for a custom frame :-)

Threaded bottom bracket? I would also go for external cable routing, but I'm a lazy mechanic.

Threaded BB absolutely. Internal cable routing, but done in a manner no more difficult than external.

And, of course, a peg for a proper full-size frame pump ;-)

Steel, custom, and you. Do we need to ask Rob English what sort of aero road bike he's been brazing recently? Silca frame pump?

Awesome to hear you are going the custom route - you mentioned you were thinking about it a few weeks ago. I'm excited to see the details and your ideas built into the system. My next build will be something similar starting with a fast fork and hopefully an English frame.

The new silca frame pump is a no-brainer - hoping to have one soon.

What kind of time-frame are you expecting for the finished build?

Hey Tom, could you comment on the reach and drop of the AeroTundo compared to the Rotundo? For one i hear the reach is measured differently.

Anyways, you may also be able to find old Vuka Sprint with classic bends. I lucked out and got one.

I just got and built up my new Scott Addict and went with the Zipp SL70 bars. I'm running ENVE wheels so I would have liked to get the ENVE bars as well, but from the research I did the SL70's are a little more slippery.

I have no ragrets. absolutely love them. using the wider platform for grip when climbing is nice too.

Looks to me like 3T measures reach and drop just like everyone else...that reach dimension may be a bit longer than others, but so is the drop:

That's the same bar I had on my S5. Although it has a round section, the drop is still "compact" at 130mm, while the AeroTundo is nearly a full 1cm more. In fact, the 3T AeroNova bar only has a drop of 123mm, which is more typical of the aero road bars out there...

Well...we're officially high-jacking this thread now...but yes, the plan is a Silca Imperio Ultimate. It's not being built by Rob English (I totally LOVE his work though), but instead by a local young framebuilder who made a splash a few years back (2012) at the NAHBS when he was voted "Rookie of the Year" http://www.stinnerframeworks.com/

I've known Aaron since he was a high school-aged "punk" living a couple doors down from me ;-) ...and his shop is literally less than 3 miles from my house :-) He's been putting out some REALLY cool work lately.

Current schedule is mid-June for the frame build. I need to make sure I have all the parts in hand to build it up then.

Tom,
Just off the phone with Stinner... your bike is going to be so awesome! Those guys are killing it right now!
Your pump will ship as soon as we have the inside-inside distance from them.

I can't wait to see the finished product. I was just checking out the Stinner's stuff - very cool.

Josh, are doing custom colours with the frame pump (Iain Radford BTW from Tekne Cycle Club)?
