Adirondacks in the summer
Usually head to Maine or Canada for several weeks in the summer, but thinking about something different--the Adirondacks--for 2024 (mid-July to early/mid-August). My concerns:
-Traffic: Is it really that bad?
-Rentals: Are they really that expensive?
-ATVs: Are they really everywhere?

Maybe because I'm looking now, not seeing many good options. Looking for something private, quiet and in the $250/$300 night range. Preferably able to bike (road or gravel), hike and/or kayak from the rental. It's only two adults and all we need are the basics: flush toilet, hot showers, kitchen and comfy bed. Is this unrealistic for summer season? Is there a better time of year?

Thanks for suggestions.

I've hiked both southern adirondacks and high peaks. High peaks trails are more crowded but worth doing. Never had a traffic or atv problem. Rentals, on the other hand, can be hard to get especially in the high peaks. I usually camp at a state park. I love both areas.

Concerns:
1. Smoke
2. Smoke
3. Smoke

If I'm in your shoes I'd be looking at non-impacted locations.

You can predict wildfires a year out? Do you have some winning lottery numbers?

one place i can recommend is Cabins at Chimney Mt. quiet, reasonably priced and you can do pretty much anything right out the front door.

Which state park? We're a big fan of state parks. I spent some time on the NY State Park website, but was having a hard time figuring out which, if any, state parks were in the Adirondacks.

you can also check out Heart Lake, run by Adirondack Mt Club, good place to camp to get on the high peak trails. It books up pretty fast, though.

Indian lake is really cool, they have boat in only campsites, rent a canoe and haul your camping gear out to your campsite.

All those look like great camping areas. For this trip, I'm looking for a modest cabin rental. We do two "big" trips a year. One is tent camping (my choice) and the other is cabin (spouse choice). I'll add these to my wish list for when it's my turn!

I've spent one week in Schroon Lake, NY for the past six Julys or so. We take a group of youth to a Bible camp in the area but still get to spend a considerable amount of time running and biking. Schroon Lake is terrific for biking. Wide berms along the main roads for miles. Off the "main drag" there are some terrific climbs with very minimal traffic. It's possible to swim in the lake but you should probably have a kayak escort, or look toward one of the many surrounding smaller lakes with less boat traffic. Running is fine. I never had a problem with cars at all, and last summer started to explore some trails that were also great to run.

I live just south in the Utica area and I go up to the southern part of the park 20 weekends a year and the central and northern (Lake Placid) area a couple times a year.

Traffic is kind of bad on the weekends in places like Old Forge, Speculator, Long Lake and obviously Lake Placid. Lots of people travelling up for the day to sightsee, etc. But during the week traffice is very light in those places so riding gets a lot easier but loops are limited unless you are at the fringes of the park. There is really only one 80 mile loop in the central area but there are tons of smaller roads to explore especially with a gravel bike.

ATVs are around but definitely not everywhere. More on the weekends kind of like everything else. I run into them all the time in the southern part of the park and they are really respectful, slowing down when passing (either direction) and friendly waves...I got an offer to drink a beer last weekend!

I wish I had advice for where to stay but I have only camped or rented a few times (outside of Lake Placid, I have stayed in town a bunch) due to my proximity.
