Accountability thread: week of March 25

How are you and how was your week?

If you're new to this, see the March 18 version - you post goals, we cheer you on / hold you accountable, etc. :-)

If you're injured and need some sympathy, PM me and I'm very happy to write back.

goals for this week
1. 7/7 healthy coping skills! I'm mad at myself for having an unhealthy coping skill day last week that ended 31 days in a row of healthy skills
2. Hip and shoulder PT as directed
3. Follow the PT plan for swim and jog
4. Journal daily
5. Daily appreciation for what my body can do
6. Practice 2 min pauses 2x a day (this is just that - I set a timer on my phone for 2 min and sit/lay and close my eyes)

1. 6/7, last Monday I did not do well. I did, however, get back on track for the rest of the week
2. done
3. done
4. if not daily, most days
5. I tried
6. I forgot

On Wed I saw a hip specialist and am waiting to schedule an MRI - likely will wait until the results of that to do more hip strength just to be on the safe side. I think we are trying to figure out is there a tendon tear, tendonitis, bursitis, or some combination. Hopefully just one of the latter two, but this is causing me immense anxiety.

M - 2300 free, 2150 kick
T - 3.29 mi jog, 6.28 mi walk
W - 3100 free, 1650 kick
T - off
F - 3100 yd swim, a little rock climbing (indoor)
S - off
S - 3100 yd swim, 900 kick

goals this coming week are the same as last, plus one
1. 7/7 healthy coping skills!

7. Stop all the sidestroke and breast kick, which was nice low level make brain happier movement, but could be irritating hamstring. Some fly/free kick is ok
8. Try more frequent swims of lower yards per session

I know I've said this over and over and I'm sorry, but I'm anxious and depressed and tired of being miserable. I'm trying really, really hard to do other things that boost my mood, even a little. It's just not working very well.

Training this coming week is similar to past 2 but with no long ride on Sat (plan is to sprinkle a little more easy volume through the first part of the week instead … but we’ll see how much energy I have for that) due to setting up race venue for my Tri club’s duathlon race on Sunday. Looking forward to volunteering duties on Sunday and hoping for nice weather (which is far from guaranteed in Scotland in March! Will repeat ‘sleep habits week’ too to see if I can make the better habits stick.

A solid training week and a successful 2nd running of my Tri squad’s duathlon race. I spent most of the weekend working on the race, which was as rewarding as it was tiring and I’m glad I didn’t schedule any weekend training. Got a little more work done on the new project but perhaps not enough yet.

Swam 13k, biked 5hrs, ran 3.5hrs, did 1x strength + 3/4 of my 10min prehab ‘sessions’. Got all my key sessions done, was just missing usual Sat longer ride (and the idea I had to sprinkle the equivalent bike volume over the earlier part of the week wasn’t well conceived and soon faltered - should just have accepted I had a busy weekend and been happy with that … and that volunteering at the race involved a lot of walking and lifting unusual objects!).

Sleep was ok this week but I’d forgotten I was out with friends on Thurs evening, which isn’t a good combo with 5am Fri alarm for swimming. I’ve noticed that the more tired I am, the more likely I am to think about reading things on phone in bed … some kind of self-defeating psychology going on there … noticing it might be enough to conquer it but otherwise I will need a new tactic.

Training this coming week is again based on my race-build weekly schedule, with some adjustments for being away for the weekend with family. Also keeping going with the focus on good sleep habits. And I will make some chowders for lunches.

Well done for being proactive with your rehab - you are doing what you can do. Hope the MRI is good news … but even if you find something that prolongs your recovery at least you can then take the best steps in light of new knowledge. Obviously it all feels a bit sh*t just now so hoping for better times ahead for you!

Thanks. I don't think I'll find out anything that prolongs the recovery. I'm fairly sure the worst case scenario is a tear. It'll be good to know, bc I've been in pain since late December. I'm hoping it's NOT torn - I have had that happen before, and I don't think the pain level was the same here. So I'm hopeful. But I'll be crushed if it is. Anyway I got the MRI scheduled for 4/5 and a follow up for 4/9 so at least it's on the calendar.

2/2 for the week. Swim yesterday made the day start better. I also got a perk from organizing Easter gifts for my parents, and practicing a colloquium talk I am giving this coming monday

my back to back swims on T and W were fine, but I had shoulder pain yesterday. Plan had been to swim today :-( normally I'd just switch to tomorrow but pool is closed, so will spend two days out of the water to be safe.

5/5 for the week on healthy coping; yesterday wasn't perfect (ate sugar when should've napped. I KNEW the sugar craving was fatigue, not hunger) but I didn't give in to the really unhealthy coping skill I am trying to eradicate when my anxiety spiked

am very anxious today :-( but can cope in healthy ways
