A confession and a new bike!
If you were to search my old posts, you might find me bashing an LBS in my area (brooklyn) for having piss poor customer service, and probably seeing a lot of others agreeing. I'd like to recant those feelings as I went to the store today and because of the over the top great service, I walked out with a new Tri bike!

R&A cycles is very near my apartment (a 10 minute walk). They have, hands down, the most awesome collection of bikes anywhere. VERY high end stuff with prices so equally high end I can't imagine who buys them... (having said that, while I was there today I watched a German man drop +17 GRAND on the most awesome bike I've ever seen). The place is worth visiting just to drool.

I've been looking for a new Tri bike for a while. Like a year and a half or more. I actually decided last year that I wanted a Felt B12, but I procrastinated and the season escaped and at the end of the year there were none left in my size. Then this year, the search was on again, and felt is all sold out until the '11s come out in several weeks!! --by then the season will practically be over again.

So, after an OWS this morning with two training buddies, I was convinced I should give R&A another try. Grant, one of the two I was with, said he bought his QRoo there and had awesome service. Told me to ask for Felix.

So, after the swim, I checked out R&A with my wife, expecting to see some bike porn but not expecting to see any customer service. I asked for Felix, he was there was was really nice. I also was helped by two other guys, one I think named Mike, I forget the other's name (sorry!) but he was awesome too.

They talked to me about bike options, showed me some sweet rides, and then said they could build up a B12 for me, did a quick size up to make sure it was the right size, and then went to work on the Felt.

Anyway, this story is getting long, but in a nutshell, I've been pleasantly surprised with R&A. I decided not to allow past experience hinder present experience. Plus, my wife said she just wanted me to buy the damn bike so I'd stop complaining and just ride more.

Maybe they've read some of the bad press, maybe some of the people have turned over, or maybe this time was a fluke, but I left R&A with the bike I've been drooling over for the longest time, and met some cool people (also getting bike fittings) while I spent half the day there. I'll be going back!

Oh, and here's a pic. Need to buy a few things (rear hydration.. suggestions?) and a computer. All I've done is remove some stickers and the reflectors.

Question... do I remove the wheel stickers to make it look more "stealth"?

Yep, bought my Look 596 from them. Felix and Mike are great and both are pretty good at fits.

I really hope you didn't let Felix get too touchy feely with you!!

Anyhow, Al is great if you ever need anything in a hurry, it's just too bad for me that I live in Connecticut and have to drive all the way in for something.

The Wiliers and Pinarellos are damn sweet, but then you look in the back room and they just have all the greatest gear there.

BTW, use the wheels it came with as a back up or training wheel, then grab a set of 808's from ebay or the ST classifieds. Remove the stickers and it will be very stealthy. Before I had the Look 596, I had the Felt DA and it was a damn good bike.

Agree. Lose the wheel stickers.
And move it away from where the homeless guy took a whiz.

I'm happy to see you gave them a second chance... and they totally redeemed themselves.

I disagree, I think the customer service is great...if you know what you want (which you did) and are ready to buy (which you were). The blow offs tend to occur to those that go in to browse and do not ask for help on a specific item.

My buddy just bought two bkes in the last month from them. Nothing but fantastic CS. His bikes were bought over the phone. He was able to talk to the owner each time and has nothing bit good things to say abou them.

Phil actually answered the phone????? Usually that's Al's department.

They overnighted gear to my hotel at St. Anthony's this year at 4pm. There when you need them.

I want to hear about the $17k+ bike. What did he get???

I am trying to put together that price --

Guru CR.901 (custom) with SRAM Red and Zipp Vuka Bars: $9,000
SRM Pro DA 7900: $3900
Zipp Sub 9: $2,000
Zipp 1080 front: $1,100

Dang, all that only gets me to $16,000.

Add tax. And pedals. And bottle cages. And Garmin. And R2C shifters. And bike fit. And spare kit. And new saddle.

The rabbit hole for bike expenses is bottomless. Ask my wife.

I was in RA once during a trip to NYC and was ignored by the staff. I find it interesting that the people here who say they had great customer service from the shop all were there to buy an expensive bike. Humm.....

It was a road bike. I THINK it as a Pinarello Montello (the guy there said the frame was $5,500). Then he had Di2 grouppo (4,500?) and a set of Lightweight wheels (not sure which one but they had red spokes) that's 5 or 6 grand. He said the tires were high end, so that's a couple hundred per tire. The saddle, pedals, etc... The shop guy said it might be the most expensive bike that's left the store. Anyway, it was pretty sweet. My felt is REALLY light, I lifted this guys bike up and the difference was so much I could have cried.

If you check, it's a frighteningly accurate map of Australia. He's a very talented piss-artist.
