longest run in 3+ months, on snowy + muddy trails. about 9.5 miles, led ms. dawhead and our friend gene who is training for the miami marathon and was wrapping up an 80mile week, the whole way. felt pretty good, as in "wow, here i am, 19th run in 15 days". thanks, dev.

maybe I'm still in. I dunno. heel seems to be doing well enough. Dog run today and had to hold him back from a boa crossing the road. Another animal to add to the list I've seen out there. Boar (wild pig like thing, so I'm guessing boar), croc (blocking the path and I turned tail and RAN), deer, tortuga (marine, nesting but way lost), herons, lots of birds, iguana and hermit crabs up the wazoo, green snakes, coati, mutant bunnies (can never remember their name so that's their name), and now a boa. Never boring on my runs.

Glad to hear you are hanging in there. I tried some intervals and strained my shin so now I have a shin splint in one leg. That limits me to 12 min miles max and the treadmill for a few weeks. My coach gets back next week and I'll confer with him on a course of action.

I am recovering myself. Try being a rescuer at a auto extrication 4 in the morning with it. Not fun but somehow it does not bother you till your back again. That said I was in bed from the end of my shift till 2 hrs ago. And now watching the Hobbit with the kids at the oboe theatre. At least I lost some weight :0)

I am day 52, run #52. I started the challenge a little early. It felt nice to pass the half way mark. I had to double up two times so far. I am very pleased at how comfortable I feel running, my base is really solid. I look forward to really increasing my mileage after the challenge is over. I am still shooting for 100 runs but we shall see how it goes.

It's pretty nice to run in Montreal right now ...as long as you don't spend too much time on the streets/sidsewalks ... most parks paths are hard packed snow at the moment, not the quickest surface but ok for logging distance

but you really have to keep your eyes open for the snow removal machinery ... serious, especially after dark

I totally blew it and didn't have my phone/camera with me for my last two runs. Saturday's run was done in the middle of a heavy snowfall (very pretty). Sunday's run was in the evening with the temperature in the teens (with a wind chill approaching 0 deg F). The combination of blowing snow and the setting sun was picture worthy. I think today's run may include some decent scenery, so I'll be sure to take some snap shots.

Only at 11runs but took some days off when I couldn't run anywhere (safely) in Guatemala. Now back in the minneapolis with plenty of safe but icy trails to run in 5 degree weather. This is the first st challenge I have ever entered but its actually helping me along so thanks for setting it up.

Dear Coach Dev:

Just returned from Canada for the holidays, so haven't been on ST much and just now catching up. Tomorrow, I'll run with my Galaxy phone and take a cool pic to post.

In the meantime, I want to thank you for your Dec. 22 reply to me: You're an inspiration. I'll never complain about baking cookies for six hours again. The cookies were a hit though with the family in Canada. Also, Coach Dev, I'm glad you're feeling better.

On vacation in Canada, Bumpass played/ran with his doggie friends, Beane, Bella, & Rory. It's funny how much faster he runs with his friends. Here's a pic of Bumpass after a long run in the yard with his buddies:

Out in the snow a couple days ago in my neighborhood just a little Southeast of St. Louis. Enjoying this challenge! Didn't get a run in yesterday, so I'm 1 run behind... but I'll make it up this week.

I won't wish you all Happy New Year, I think because it is up to make them Happy. None of us can make it happy for each other. It just comes from within or not (I've been victim of glass half empty at times, so a Happy New Year generally means glass half full).

Something to keep in mind. As athletes, we get the same amount of time in a year as everyone else....31.5 million seconds. We can sit around and complain those seconds away, or we can look at each one having a precious meaning, and use it to better the lives of our friends, our families, random strangers, ourselves and fellow athletes. 31.5 million seems like a lot, but they go fast and sadly we don't get a single one back.

I got some nice pictures from a run on Dec 24th before I got pretty sick. I'll load them up some time today.

Dev

OK....here are some shots....fortunately no war, no landmines, no sniper fire, no one trying to kill me. Sounds drastic, but I was just talking to a friend who came back from a tour as a medic in Afghanistan and that's what he was saying about his current "low stress job" as a medic in the med-evac air ambulance, flying around the region trying to save people in distress....very different from doing the same in Afghanistan being shot at, and fearing death.

Snow drifts down the street

my foot prints....our prints on earth are temporary...we just rent this space

Kiddie soccer field where my son used to play when he was 5 (11 years ago)

local beaver pond all frozen over for the winter:

City snow removal has cleared the path between two neighbourhood blocks

Snowpack already pretty high on my street before the latest storm

Snow was 3 feet high, but surprisingly hard packed, holding up my body weight

All of these are within 1k of home. This is why have passed up many job opportunities to move elsewhere. No place like home.

Great pics and commentary, thanks for sharing!

I had my short, early morning run today on ice covered roads with spiked shoes. Very quiet and peaceful out on this the first day of the new year.

(Deleted previous post since I failed at inserting pictures the first time.)

Ran 3 this morning on the treadmill since I wasn't sure what today was going to bring. A window (of both weather and opportunity) opened this afternoon, and I headed outside for 6 miles touching a couple of grandly-named local parks. Here's the trail through Valhalla. It's not quite a "Hall of the Slain" worthy of the gods, but it's a decent place to add a mile of trails to a pavement-filled run.

On the way back home, I took a detour through Deadman's Hill. The sledding hill doesn't really endanger life and limb, but it's about as good as you can get in mid-Michigan. There's also about 0.3 miles of trail leading back to my subdivision.

Nothing grand, but devashish_paul asked for pictures and I used the request as an excuse to enjoy a nice winter afternoon. (I'm also now one ahead of 100/100 pace; I'm sure I'll appreciate the buffer at some point in the next couple months.)

Kparkins and I completed an interesting duathlon called the dip n dash today. 2 mile run followed by a frigid swim through the Tchefunce river followed by another 2 mile run. The water was 59 and it was freakin cold. I'm not sure why we did the race. But, I got my 30 minutes of run in counting the warmup. I'll try to load pics later on.

Wow, that second run must have been brutal.

A bit short of 11 miles this morning. 7F ( -14C ) according to my car. It was not too unpleasant on the parts of my loop that were sheltered from the wind, the parts going into the wind provided motivation to pick up the pace a bit.

Thanks. I thought for sure I was out, and my goal of running every day for 100 days is out, but it seems my heel is doing fine now. I just need to keep the distance low for a few weeks and then I think I can start to increase. My ego is forcing me to do doubles to "catch up" though so that is something I've never done. Interesting. Taking this week off the bike as I was really starting to hate it and Jamie said it wasn't so good to be burning out on cycling in December (!!) but now the kilos are starting to catch up with the lack of food decrease so I have a feeling tomorrow will be back on the bike. No real winter this year other than November. Been around 28-30 every day in December.
